I was in Aden twice, 1961 and 1967. Even today, back home in the UK, one of my Friends Father lived in Shiek Othman. There are many descendants of Steamer Point Seamen who sailed on British Ships, living in my Town. I loved Aden and these pictures bring back happy memories. Was Independence in 67 the right move, I dont think so. Aden was a bustling, thriving Port, a bunkering Port for Ships going to the Far East. If only it could be that way now. Mae aslalama.

I also was in Aden, It was in1987. I completely agree with you. In the 50s - 60s it was a bustling port. I keep in memory Crater, Malii, Steamer. I visited Shiek Othman and Salahuadin. Sweet memories.

نغم كانت اليوم عدن تشكي من اهلها من مواطنيها من سكانها عبثو بئمنها واستقرراها وتنميتها وجمال منظرها ومدنيتها عندن تنتظر من ينقذها ويعيد لها بريقها ومدنيتها وثقافتها ولونها الفريد من بين مدن الشرق الاوسط

I lived in Clocktower flats Tawahi for my first 3 months in Aden in 1965, we were moved to Korhmaksar camp later in the year as the situation in Steamer point Maala deteriorated, as an 11 year old it was a fascinating place to be, I met my first Arab friend there, same age age as me his name was Faisal and his dad was the local baker.

I was in Tawhi until 1968. I went back in 2010 and was sad to see how everything want wrong. But now is worse may God help Tawhi and her people

It went down hill from 1970 onwards. I'm sure I don't need tell you what Aden went through from 1970.

it is very sad to see what was a fairly happy and flourishing place for its inhabitants descend into utter ruin due to incompetent and bigoted leaders. better a colony than an shambles

Now it is very sad to see Aden city..people are killing. Brothers killing brothers. Children of Adam. I lived at 584 B Hai Rashid, Khormaksar from 1969 till 1975. Leslie David davidonrocks@gmail.com

I grew up in Tawahi and was in Tawahi until 1968. I went in 2010 it sad to how was it. But now is worse. May God help Tawahi and the people who now live there.

Tony, Aden went down hill since 1970. Aden went through various struggles since 1970 - mainly consisting of political struggle. Aden became a communist/Marxist/Leninist country aligned to the Soviet Union (1970). Then, Aden went through a mini civil war in 1978 and they disposed the president of that era. Then, Aden went through another civil war in 1986 and again disposed the president of that era. The fall of the Soviet Union (the one that provided the funding to Aden) meant South Yemen needed to resolve the issue fast as they were a country in debt and were fearing mass hunger/poverty. So, they persuaded North Yemen leadership to unite as One Yemen. However, it ended in tears. Yes, you guessed it, Aden went through another civil war in 1994 due to secessionist wanting to Cede from North Yemen as the unification turned out to be a complete joke. Now in 2015, a major civil war is going on in North Yemen. The Southerners have united and fought their arch enemy the North and have kept the South for the Southerners. However, Aden is pretty much destroyed in the 2015 war. All critical infrastructure had been destroyed. No water, no electricity, and no medicines/hospitals. Buildings have the scars of war (destroyed). What you see in this video is old footage of the past. In reality it is a different kettle of fish. Maybe one day when the war is over and the political situation stabilises, you can pay a visit to Aden and Reminisce the past.

Good morning, after the Yemeni unity between southern Yemen and northern Yemen directly, tourism and life in Aden were disrupted by the government of the unified state, and they rebuilt the city of Sana'a as the capital of Yemen.
