That is so cool! Unfortunate to hear about this gentleman's experience being excluded from other groups just because of needing glasses, but MAN this move into a cyberpunk theme is amazing.

Really makes you wonder how people with poor eye sight or aging were treated. Something tells me better then that group of pretenders treated him. I’ve seen a lot of strange stuff from re-enactors. I dated a girl who’s father was a civil war pretender. Let’s just say they have many levels of bull. Hobbies should be fun , I’m glade he found something he enjoys

That was really great, Zed. This feels very welcoming and un-gatekeepy compared to more intense re-enactment groups. I imagine that any group telling someone they can't wear their glasses wouldn't be very enjoyable to me. On the other hand, Weyland makes me want to join!

Gatekeeping can be equally good and bad. A lack of gatekeeping ruined 40k and Star Wars, but too much gatekeeping ruined some great media and the like, kinda like Waterworld, some old 80's cartoons and the Super Best Friends/TheSw1tcher

Very nice to see! One thing I tell folks who are getting into the wilderness things is that they need to eschew the modern as much as possible. While I'm not a stickler for a lot of things, it's amazing to see folks' eyes light up when you point out that 90% of what they are using and wearing is made from oil and will end up in a landfill sooner or later. How much do you love nature if everything about you is made to basically pollute nature in the next few years after you've finished with it? In my own experience, I've found that something as simple using Tarred Marline almost exclusively really made me wake up to what I was doing. Sure, it's more expensive than parachute cord, but it will also rot away to nothing in a decade or two. Maybe even more important, at least to me, is that it reminds me of my ancestors and heritage and culture. It's carrying on a tradition in a practical way. Even using good three-ply cotton cord provides me with the speed and efficiency that I need, and it's a "throw away" item that cannot hurt a thing. How many millions of pounds of parachute cord are now polluting the wild spaces because people left it behind? How much pollution is in the manufacturing of that stuff? And for what? Do you really need 550# of tensile strength to hold your cooking tripod together? Tarred Marline will do all that and more, yet is wholly organic and helps to support a small industry that needs the help. Of course, as soon as you get into that, you'll start looking at other ways to go more natural. Next thing you know, you'll be reading Ashley's great tome - the Ashley Book of Knots - and looking for ways to decorate your gear or use rope around the house. Once you go down that rabbit hole, you'll never again think of ratchet straps and bungee cords as anything more than "low brow" kit not befitting a gentleman of your station. 😁
@LitoGeorge
@LitoGeorge Жыл бұрын
I love your post. I will look into Tarred Marline as I have never heard of, and I have been outdoors all my life. I despise all things made of oil, and yet I use them to remain in "modern life". Actively working hard to leave it all behind. Making natural/ organic choices daily to replace the convenience of earth killing mainstream options. Not always easy, I'll admit. Thanks for your input, I find it valuable and encouraging that there are other folks with this mindset. Very much in the minute minority, I'll admit.
@threeriversforge1997
@threeriversforge1997 Жыл бұрын
@@LitoGeorge Tarred Marline, and all tarred ropes of natural fiber, used to be common in the outdoors circles, but then it got forgotten as everyone clambered to join the polymer crowd. And to be fair, plastic ropes are easier to deal with because they are made of oil and don't rot. Unless you're involved in history, specifically the Golden Age of Sail, the chances of running across even a mention of the stuff is unlikely. People complain that natural fiber ropes aren't reliable because they rot. This is true, and a very good thing. They rot. Even if you tar them with the best Stockholm Tar available, the rope will eventually be "not fit for purpose". Congratulations, not only did you save the environment a bit of hassle, but now you have to go back and buy more rope, supporting a small business that needs all the customers it can get. And, there's nothing saying you can't take that worn line and make something nice from it like a Thump Mat or drink holder or hammock for the back yard. The sailors of olden days always used worn line to make non-essential and decorative pieces. It's a great way to keep hold of something that has so many good memories in it.

This is one of the most hilarious, yet brilliant concepts for camping I have ever encountered. Im quite into my "retro" gear when I camp, and I own some vintage stuff like the polish lavvu tent, but this is next level. I am going to try and incorporate some of my more eccentric gear into my load out from now on. I have a minature (but genuine) Eccles Lamp. Having watched this Im determined to take it camping next time. I really love what these guys are about.

The main way I find out about these events and gatherings is through Facebook groups, i'd highly suggest joining as many as you can that are specific to Canada and your region specifically. Bare in mind you do have to sift through the myriad of things going on to find the gems like this event I went too, best of luck in your search my friend! ~Peace~

@@Zedoutdoors ah, there's my thing: I left FB about 9 years ago, and am so happy I did it. Guess I'll have to find another way. Cheers mate.

@@Zedoutdoors I actually have an ex missionaries bow tent from the 20's. It's still got poles made from cane... as a show piece, pretty rare

Enjoyed. I have a question that may sound smart ass( my Grandma said, “ it’s better to be a smart ass, then a dumb butt”); you weren’t able to wear contact lenses? There is a guy who’s a living historian, much like this gent, although, he’s not a bloody Britt. 😁 I also realize this is more like a proper Britt safari type camp with much of the creature comforts. The guy I’m referring to, is more about history of backpacking, camping with much history, has a channel, sargevining. Cheers.

Yes he could have worn contact lenses, but that involves extra expenses and materials. I do understand what you're saying though, alas it was unfortunate either way the way he was treated ~Peace~

It's a shame 'Linen Canvas' (instead of Cotton canvas) isn't resurrected and used more often ! It would definitely be more correct for the UK.

Once waterproofed canvas is good but it's not as durable as nylon.

I think it has more to do with availability and costing, saying that I also hope to see more linen canvas being made readily available ~Peace~
