SteamRanger Heritage Railway: Steam & Diesel Double Header

On the 20th of May 2018, the Steam Ranger Heritage Railway Southern Encounter ran from Mount Barker to Victor Harbour & Return. 958 hauled the train from Mount Barker to Goolwa before RX207 joined to lead to service to Victor Harbor and then back to Mount Baker in the afternoon with 958 in behind, creating a rare Steam/Diesel Double Header.

When looking at this engine, you dont expect to hear a big 5 chime! You expect to hear a "peanut squeaker"1 chime whistle! She really brings back the bygone days of the SAR

Beautiful train but why would they have a steam & diesel loco hauling this train? Couldn't one loco suffice?

958 could've done it on its own and did it from Mount Barker to Goolwa, but RX207 joined. Steam is the face of the heritage railway, so of course, it led the rest of the day's services. RX207 had to return to Mount Barker anyway so SteamRanger took the opportunity to give the passengers something cool to ride behind with a doubleheader and get their engine back to the main depot for maintenance. @@MS_Trains Ok that explains it. I actually wanted to be a train driver for VR when attending Tech School in the early 80s. Failed Year 10 though so that ended my dream. I'm keen to ride that train called the 'Ranger something'........I think its a Diesel rail motor that runs to Bugle Ranges? The green car with yellow stripes on the front.........looks cool.

@@garynewton1263 Sounds like you're talking about the Bugle Ranger. It's normally ran with a single RedHen Railcar. The railcar you're describing is the Brill which is based out of Goolwa and occasionally rans the Cockle Train or Strathlink. @@MS_Trains Oh I got it mixed up. Yeah the Mt Barker to Bugle Ranges train. Hopefully I'll get on it one day. Is there a station at Bugle Ranges or just a siding or something?

So Dangerous how the shutters ride around on the steps of the locomotives travelling at speed like that. That's illegal in Victoria.

Since the rolling stock looks American, the engine's whistle sounds American.

The rolling stock looks American and the whistles are American designed because the commissionor of the south Australian railways was American. A lot of the bigger passenger steam locos are very American in appearance.
