I've been writing software since I was a kid in the 80s. I've been in the game industry a very long time. Why is it, that in 2017, we're being told to use a command prompt to create a build? Whatever happened to just uploading a zip file?

Well there "is" an advantage to it. Said command prompt comes with a built-in scanner. So when you make a new version of your game, it will just search for the differences and not ask you to reupload the whole thing (+ it feels quite a bit hackery).
@TankdozerCavalry6 жыл бұрын
You don't! You automate your release cycle and let your build system deal with SteamCMD. You set it up once and it makes your life so much easier as well increasing the experience of your game/product by preventing bugs from creeping in because you forgot a certain action during packaging. (Any half decent build system should allow you to create a "upload release" target or something.)

Had a problem with Error! Failed to commit build for appid (xxxxxx): Invalid Parameter. I solved my own problem and am posting this here in case anyone else runs into the same issue: If you're having trouble with the uploader returning "Invalid Parameter" errors it's probably because you didn't assign the correct depot id in your app_build and depot_build scripts. Your app id is NOT the same number as your depot id and the instructor does not explain this well enough. My app id (with X's to cover the first 3 numbers for privacy) is "XXX870". My depot id is "XXX871". Therefore I needed to title my scripts "app_build_XXX870" and "depot_build_XXX871". In the app_build_XXX870 script under "depots" I need to give it the proper depot ID: XXX871 and point it to "depot_build_XXX871.vdf". Then in the depot_build_XXX871 script I need to assign the proper DepotID XXX871. Hope this helps someone out.

+BluishGreenPro OK, I figured it out. While this doesn't work exactly as I thought it would, here's how it's done in my case. ContentRoot contains full path to the build, it doesn't end with ...\content\: "ContentRoot" "D:\Downloads\sdk\tools\ContentBuilder\content\windows" LocalPath is still set as * rathern than \windows as it used to when ContentRoot didn't show full path: "LocalPath" "*" And DepotPath as: "DepotPath" "." As a result I will have to change ContentRoot if I ever want to use the same scripts for compiling a build for different platform (assuming I put the Linux build in e.g. \content\linux\ directory) but as this isn't the case now, this does its job.

when you click publish, does it publish the game to steam, or do you have to do something else to do that?

"Already logged in"... how to log in on that command line?
Could you please confirm that should I delete the steam_appid.txt file in my game project folder before uploading the final depot for release? or let it be there?

This seems to be out of date. He says there should be a "Configuration" tab under "Installation", but there isn't a tab like that, just "General", "Redistributables", "Client Images", and "EULA". The new replacement for "Configuration" seems to be called "General", but it doesn't have some of the options listed under "Configuration" in the tutorial. Also, the "Depots" tab now seems to be under "Steampipe" rather than "Installation". When editing "depot_build" file, there are now differences: "ContentRoot" has been added, so the default root is no longer the same as what this tutorial says. He also doesn't explain "steam command" and there's now a batch file for it anyway: I had to figure out that it's the run_build batch file in ContentBuilder folder; and you need to edit that batch file to put in your steam screenname, password and app_build filename (and preferably add PAUSE so you can actually read the inevitable error message), It'll say your account isn't authorized on the computer you're using, so you need to get the SteamGuard code they send via email, then type it in, then it processes and uploads the file, or so it says; but when I checked the depot on steam it gave me an error message saying there wasn't a default depot for the app. Everything in the tutorial from this stage onward seemed to be obsolete since the steamworks layout in the tutorial didn't resemble the current layout, so I fumbled around consulting the checklist in the right side of the main app page and then looking for the corresponding option on the lefthand side, then filling in all required information, uploading images, etc. The checklist finally said everything was ready, so I submitted my store page and game build for review (at top of main app page - there are two options to submit both items for review). But then the reviewer said the build failed because it didn't contain the necessary files, and referred me to a page which was supposed to allow me to include the depot in the build but the page doesn't contain any clickable options for anything related to that. A member of the support team told me to go to a specific link to set the default build, but it said I don't have the necessary permissions to access the page despite the patent fact that my account is the administrator for the app and has all permissions. At this point I'm beyond frustrated. I've been programming for three decades (not years, decades), so I'm not exactly ignorant. Isn't there an updated tutorial available, preferably a plain text tutorial - so we don't have to try to squint at the itty bitty screen in the video which is almost impossible to read? And as others have noted, it would've been ridiculously easy for a huge corporation to just make a simple process whereby you can select the files the normal way rather than going through all this rigamarole. In fairness, the review process and support response have been extremely rapid compared to other companies, so Steam deserves a lot of credit for that; but the process of uploading is a nightmare. I've already spent a week on it and still haven't uploaded anything workable.

I was able to download the assembly only with the help of the archive, directly from the Steam page. Only after that I got a build and a branch.

Thank you for the video. It helped me a ton! Question: My build is done and confirmed on Steamworks. Now, I've given two users (my main and my test accounts) access/permissions to the game. In Steam, it doesn't pop up in the list of games like it does in this video at 8:42. Help? Thanks!

Yes! My issue was with setting up a depot and default build. If you can find a tutorial on that, it should fix it. If I helped, check out Einlanzer on March 1 as a thank you! :-) store.steampowered.com/app/553760/

Hi, I'm using Unity free, can I use these instructions to package my game onto Steam? I've got a greenlit game, now I need to know if I need any special Unity asset or not (I'm not very bothered about adding ingame achievements or the api stuff from steam etc), thanks for any help with this.

To upload an updated build, do we just replace the data in the sdk\tools\ContentBuilder\content folder and run steamcmd?

Hi, Steam Devs!! Answer the HUGE question, please!! Why don't you have an option for the Steam Client to make it possible to install and play games branches of the retail DVD's???? Add that feature, please!!!! Because there are still many users with really slow ADSL internet connection and they order DRM retail games to install they exactly from those media disks. Thank you!!

Everything works fine for me if the build is small (16MB) but i cannot upload the whole game (200+ MB). It just says "Uploading" for a long time, then eventually times out :(
@mbabuskov8 жыл бұрын
Most likely that your Internet connection is too slow and upload times out. I had similar problems when uploading large trailers to Steam. I solved it by renting a VPS on a fast Internet connection and uploading from there.

out of date and useles! It is very compicated to upload a single game to Steam! Incredibly confusing. You have to just upload the game just upload the game!
