The penalty kickers for Barcelona were absolutely awful. Weak shots (except for the first one). This game proved to the Barca fans that their team was mentally weak. They needed a coach with winning-mentality (Cruyff, Guardiola, Rijkaard).

I'm portuguese and FC Porto fan. Grew up in the 80s and i miss so much this competion in his real essence. Only champions! Steua, Red Star, Goteborg, Anderlech/Brugge, D. Kiev, Galatasaray, Panathinaikos/Olympiakos, Spartak Moscow, Ajax/PSV, CSKA Sofia, Sparta Praha, Brondby, etc, etc. That was a competition so good with great teams, from so many different countries.

Many great players were in our league. I remember this as a kid, it was the previous year FC Porto (who had lost against Barcelona this 1986 season because of away goals) won the European Cup. This match lasted for two hours plus add time and even in the penalty shootout nobody wanted to score a goal. I was supporting Steaua then and i still love it whenver the underdog team wins. what a super team was Steaua in the late 80's especially in the period 1986-1989 , Steaua played 2 finals, became champion of Europe in 1986 , winning against FC Barcelona 2-0 (after penalties shoot-out) , then semifinalist in 1988 , and again finalist in 1989 , lost against a mighty AC Milan (0-4) , then revolution came ,communism fallen in december 1989 in Romania ,and with 1990 all Steaua stars were free to go to play in West for real money...weakened the team and lost strenghts,suddenly, to be again in top teams of Europe ,forever! that super team could play another finals in Europe! and i'm not joking at all! Hagi had 24 years old in 1989 , and in 1990 very soon after revolution was transfered to play for Real Madrid

Helmut Ducadam was absolutely great! What a times! Currently it's impossible for teams from eastern Europe to win UCL. However, I remember the times when teams from Romania, Russia (actually Ukraine), Hungary, Poland, Cechoslovakia and Yugoslavia were really strong. For example, Widzew from Poland, they won vs Manchester City, Manchester United, Juventus, and Liverpool. They were not really that great. Steaua lost the intercontinental cup against River Plate and they were crushed against Milan in 1989. They did not reach the finals in 1987 and 1988. In 1989, they faced weak opponents until the finals.

In the last campaign, Steaua faced and destroyed the champions of Czechoslovakia (Sparta Praga), Soviet Union (Spartak Moscow), Sweden (IFK Goteborg, a double time winner of the UEFA Cup in 1982 and 1987) and Turkey (Galatasaray). Was this opposition weaker? Not in a million years!
