Historically that design is called a prod and I remember it having two bowstrings and a pouch for holding a rock . The advantage being you don't need to make arrows and can shoot rocks and debris from damage done to your fortress .

That is neat SSBB! Basically a 21st century Chinese pebble bow. If the bearings penetrate both sides of a steel can I would say it is lethal, same as with a slingshot.
