I've been railfanning for quite some time now, so a trip here was long overdue! This is CP 502 on the NS Chicago Line, where the busy mainline (by busy I mean 60-70 trains a day) passes a large yard, Arcelor-Mittal's GIANT steel mill, and is crossed by IHB's Egyptian Line, which serves a very unique train: the Bottle train, which carries molten steel from the plant here to Riverdale, IL (and yes, it is featured in this video). As if all of this wasn't enough, Arcelor-Mittal has remote control switchers, which were rebuilt with CAT engines.
In this video, you will see mainline freights, locals, the Bottle Train, Amtrak (the Pere Marquette and the Capitol Limited), and switching action. Enjoy!

Looking at an SD70 coming out from under a bridge, I remembered I was working on building a prototype for a work-stand to access the Dynamic Brake Grids, which for some STUPID reason, EMD put them on the very end of the Long Hood End, where the Radiators and Cooling Fans used to be on just about every other engine they made was. There wasn't ANY ROOM to stand or sit to disconnect and dismount the 6 pie shaped grids, & the Grid Cooling Fan, that the grids were mounted to the top of. I didn't get to finish it. I don't know if anyone finished building it or not. Someone is going to get bad hurt, working on grids on SD70's ! THANKS FOR YOUR CHANNEL.

The bottle train or the GP15s with the coils?

Looked this up on Google maps, a lot of industry & railyards. Not much on street view. Figured out that the billets were being transferred to the rolling mill, where do the coils go ? Where do they dump the slag ?

The cooks on the first train go over to new Carlisle Indiana to intek/inkote steel plant. It’s about 55 miles eat of this location. There’s a dedicated train 7 days a week for these coils. Empties come up and could go back.

Where was this taken from? Based on the clip towards the end & satellite it appears to be a pedestrian bridge? Any trouble from security?
@WindyCityRails
@WindyCityRails 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's a pedestrian overpass. I've never had problems walking or shooting from up there however security may give you problems if you try and park at the entrance of it. There's about three lots there and I've had various responses parking in each. Some guards ask me not to shoot the mill building, some tell me to move to one of the other lots (which I've already been asked to leave) and some just don't want people there at all.
