I'm wondering if they went the comedy route due to the fact that their particular style of music (even though I love it) hasn't been popular in the mainstream for 20+ years. This approach has given them success that a straight retro-80's/early 90's hair band probably would not have achieved. The band members are also in their mid 40's, so they've probably been-there-done-that and just want to have some fun.

Actually Michael Star & Satchel were doing pretty well in the Atomic Punks, the best Van Halen {Roth era) tribute band in the world. Check it out on youtube, they're awesome. I'd rather see them as the fake Van Halen than seeing the real Van Halen today.

I think that's pretty fucking obvious, but what I think our friend was referring to is their massive amount of talent, which is quite wasted on comedic songs. Don't get me wrong, I love these guys, but they could do so much more.
