@@user-bm2hi1ei5r *EDIT, I WAS WRONG* Sprry, this is bugging me and i can not find anoter example of this effect in other videos whilst searching for "steel tongue drum underwater. Removing overtones doesn't lower the notes it removes the upper frequencies while the fundemental stays the same. What we hear in this clip isn't a "low pass filter", the pitches are being bent down. Either there is fuckery afoot and the audio we hear isn't what is played in the video. Or somehow the water changes the pitch, which i haeve a hard time concieveing since he pushes the handpan down in to the water meaning the handpan is being slightly filled with more water resulting in the resonant cavity becoming smaller. This shouldn't change the pitch. If it would it would change the pitch "upwards". If the water was muting the vibration of the tongues the pitch would go up like with a ruler against a desk. I am so terribly sorry for this rant but i simply believe that the things you hear in this video is not what you see, and the uthor would prefer to play into magical thinking rather than inform that it is an audial trick. ​@@StungoBungo It seems to me that water is not hard enough to become a line that would completely absorb the energy of the tongue vibration, like the edge of a table, thus increasing the frequency. At the same time, water is poorly compressed and acts as an additional weight on the tongue, lowering the frequency. I am sure that the air volume of the instrument does not affect the frequency of tongue vibration. I am not a physicist, I play the guitar and compare a steel tongue and a string, I think these are similar systems. If you pour water into the deck of an acoustic guitar, the tension of the strings and their weight will not change. If you put the edge of your palm on the string without pressure, the energy of the overtones will quickly be released. On the guitar, the frequency increases from palm mute only if you press on the strings, increase their tension, water does not press on the tongue. The tongue has to push the water, then pull it along with it, because water is much denser than air and cannot easily compress and stretch, the tongue loses energy faster and has additional weight, because the water sticks when the tongue moves away from it. I'm not sure we can understand how this works without a physicist, this is just my subjective view : )

I have a original steel drum in my spare bedroom. My mom in the 1960s put together a dance troupe called The Magic Children. The boys played the steel drums and the girls did African dances which I helped to choreograph at the age of ten. We had a repertoire of about 10 songs of that era. We were locally famous for a minute! 😆😆😆 We even got invited to CBS studios in Manhattan to perform on a children's show called What's Around The Corner and other places!!! Great memories! We had a great time!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊
