Dad, ND alum, was stationed at the Defense Depot in Memphis. We visited Eureka Springs, a small town in the Northwest of Arkansas, and watched this game in the hotel room. I was only 6 and watched this whole season with Dad. He invited me to watch the Michigan game and after that, I was hooked. We were yelling and screaming with the window to our hotel room open and people were laughing while passing by on the street at how much fun we had. Great memories.

89 team was better, but had a bad half & turnovers ruin their season. 93 was also just as good as 88. 90 was a powerhouse as well. ND was elite in late 80s/early 90s.

I traveled from StL to this game at SC. 1st time ever that these great rivals played w both teams unbeaten and untied.. 1 v 2 tremendous pregame build up and even better once ball was snapped.. Tony Rice and the offense ran the wishbone option to perfection and mixed in clutch throws all game. ND's defense was outstanding, causing turnovers and relentlessly punishing SC's skill players.

Strong arm? Yes. Accurate passer? No. It's something he had to work on. Holtz had him throwing darts in the offseason to improve his accuracy. And I mean that literally- actual darts at a dartboard. And Rice did, in fact, improve his accuracy. But nowhere close to NFL level. Great college QB, though. If ND had some type of HOF, Rice would be slam dunk.

They were also making some academic concessions at that time in regards to recruiting and those players, like Tony Rice, that they allowed in were having success in the classroom as well as on the field. After a few years the university, despite evidence showing these students were doing incredibly well, all but stopped those exceptions and after that it became more difficult to recruit.

I remember 2 things about Jeff Alm from that year - His ability to knock down passes and a Sports Illustrated writer's comment on his talent in the Miami game. "Jeff Alm and those damn long arms..." (paraphrase since I don't recall the next part definitively) "knocked down another pass." To that point I had saved every Sports Illustrated since ~ 1975, but I was getting tired of a growing anti ND sentiment. If you don't believe it, delete any reference to who actually won the game and read that article - you would be convinced ND, who led the whole way and by 2 TD in the 1st half, had gotten whupped....I cancelled my subscription.

To add to Michael Kraus' point below....how about Keith Jackson at 3:10, DURING THE PLAY (a huge one at that), urging that Rice stepped on the back line but the refs "didn't see it", when his foot wasn't within five feet of the back line. Wishful thinking by Jackson, really wanted those two points for USC I guess. Broadcasting is just like written journalism....you make mistakes when you WANT something to be true. Jackson wanted that to be true, and was badly mistaken.
@blacksabfan
@blacksabfan 5 жыл бұрын
Jackson was obviously confused. Rice's foot hits the back of the painted USC logo, which as you said, is about 5 feet from the actual back line. I liked Keith Jackson, but it was obvious he had a dislike for Notre Dame.
