That slap bass is sensational! And so is Maddy's delivery... five stars!

Excellent band, massive in the early `70s, then undeservedly forgotten by the record companies when Punk came along. Steeleye deserve to be massive again !

Not really expecting slap bass licks on a Steeleye Span song, but this version definitely had its charms, not the least of which is Maddy is still a commanding presence and voice.

I`d have to say that at the time I supported the strike as a CPGB member and I didn`t know Steeleye had done this song as at the time I preferred The Clash and The Style Council. I thought that it took some sheer bravery for them to play this song in 1986. I`ve had the nice experience to chat with Maddy Prior since and see no reason to doubt her good intentions.

Well, I've been a fan since '73 - saw them at Hammersmith in '75 and think this is brilliant! Great playing Rick, as ever (as a pro bassist, I have to say he influenced me considerably in my early days). With respect, banjometal's missing the point, I think - misguided critics were having a go at the "inappropriate" electric guitar in the early days - let alone the drums in "Now We Are Five". I agree with aussiepaul; they're just taking it on a bit. You can still listen to the original!

This was actually a bit of a myth. About 30% of Notts struck. Leicestershire had about 1% who struck throughout. South Derbyshire was much the same. As the latter two were small coalfields, they didn't feature as much in tactics.

@cackermuffin15 жыл бұрын
yeah, this version's pretty fucking odd. it's better if you don't watch them as you listen to it. some of the drumming's up there with the best live modern r'n'b and rap stuff - very much in the style of jay-z's live band (bars of double time, fills all over the shop, that kind of stuff - much more complex than the original). fair enough though, the bass is pretty rank and conspicuous. no slapping!!!!!

terrible version of this song, slap base has no place in folk sadly and no banjo in this version :/
