Steeleye Span are an English folk-rock band formed in 1969. Still active today, along with Fairport Convention, they are amongst the best known acts of the British folk revival.
Hark! The Village Wait was the 1970 debut album by the electric folk band Steeleye Span. The album is the only one to feature the original lineup of the band.
Maddy Prior - vocals
Tim Hart - vocals, electric guitar, electric dulcimer, fiddle, 5-string banjo, harmonium
Ashley Hutchings - bass
Terry Woods - vocals, electric guitar, concertina, mandola, 5-string banjo, mandolin
Gay Woods - vocals, concertina, autoharp, bodhran.
1."A Calling-on Song" (Hutchings)
2."The Blacksmith" (Traditional)
3."Fisherman's Wife" (MacColl)
4."Blackleg Miner" (Traditional)
5."Dark-Eyed Sailor" (Traditional)
6."Copshawholme Fair" (Traditional)
7."All Things Are Quite Silent" (Traditional)
8."The Hills Of Greenmore" (Traditional)
9."My Johnny Was A Shoemaker" (Traditional)
10."Lowlands of Holland" (Traditional)
11."Twa Corbies" (Traditional)
12."One Night As I Lay On My Bed" (Traditional)
I was a big fan of the fairports, the Trees, ISB and Pentangle for some years before I got into Steeleye maybe the "all around my hat" image put me off but I was reading the back of an LP or something and some conection was made between what I liked and Steeleye so I bought an early years compilation or something, I don't hold with compilations but they are often a cheap way of sussing out a band and I have to say Steeleye completely blew my mind! very quickly I dispenced with the compilation and scored all their early albums of which this their first is the best. you will be hooked by the end of the blacksmith and by Copshawholme Fair, you will as I did reguard Steeleye as one of the greatest Acid folk bands of all time. I have seen them live quite a few times in the last 10-15 years and unlike some of their contemporaries they don't seem to realise that 1970-75 was their ultimate hayday and have a tendency to play their later stuff which is annoying. But (at least in my opinion) if you stick to the 5 or 6 albums between those years you will utterly love this band.. There is a couple of lines in "all things are quite silent that will litteraly cause a paradime shift in your concept of what's Beautiful.
"where the lark and the blackbird so sweetly did sing and the lovely thrushes voices made the valleys to ring". Enjoy!

What a fantastic album this is! I fell in love with it upon first hearing in 1971 - I instantly felt as if I had discovered something precious and beautiful and new. 50 years later, I find this KZbin posting and think I’ll just listen to one track, but I couldn’t stop there and listened to the whole thing through. It is just as beautiful today as it was on that first listen.

Heady times mellow sounds wine and a little smoke and a whole life and world to look forward too. Now in my wood carvers workshop, carving much older reflecting on times past with a little wine and smoke still listening to these harmonies and the clear sound a song beautifully sung still fills me with pleasure for times past and eager for times to come. I could never make music but I found my mallet and chisels could sing a song of my heart and still sing a song of the past.

In the early '70's, I was in my early 20's, into all kinds of music (and deeply in love), but this beautiful band created the prettiest backdrop to all those far-off courting days. I am in my '60's now, still loving that same girl (yes, we made it somehow!), and still loving Steeleye Span. Here's a toast to each of them and particularly to the beautiful voice of Maddy Prior. I still have the vinyls but they are pretty scratched now - ooops. Glorious days!

"There is a couple of lines in "all things are quite silent that will litteraly cause a paradime shift in your concept of what's Beautiful." Thanks for that! It's exactly how I feel. Although you could apply that description to literally every moment you hear Maddie and Gay's voices harmonising. Those women were a force of nature in the way they complemented one another. Such a shame the Woods lineup couldn't have stayed together just a bit longer to explore where they could have gone with those two voices.

I love this album. It is so good! It has so much staggering, heart-tearing beauty. Gay Woods' voice is a perfect offset to Maddy Prior's voice. I might say "foil", but that would be such an unjust representation of the restrained beauty of Gay Woods' voice and its importance to this bizarrely critically underrated album.

First albums are usually the best (not always), even when still the band is working out the sound. With the mix of Maddy Prior + Tim Hart (Midlands English Folk) mixing it up with Terry and Gay Woods (Irish Folk ex-Sweeney's Men) and Ashley Hutchings freshly from the folk rock supergroup, Fairport Convention; this iteration was the best rounded sound for Steeleye Span. There were also two female voices that balanced the excesses of Maddy's solo voice (that is somewhat nasal and can get annoying if dominates an album), which made the overall vocals more smooth and cohesive compared with later. When the Woods left after this LP, more of the English purists joined such as Martin Carthy (another odd vocal style that requires some adjustment but balanced by Tim Hart's more mellow voice) came with a harder emptier sound with sharp fiddles (Peter Knight - a sound like a migraine at times), harsher thinner electric guitars and bleaker soundscape (still good but not without the mellow background of this first version of the band). Still remains my favourite LP from this 70s folk rock conglomerate. They were never as good as this first offering.

Really good appreciation there. I often wondered how they would have done if Rick had replaced Ashley on bass and they'd brought in Jerry Conway on drums full-time. No disrespect Ashley, mind, but I love Rick Kemp's lyricism on the bass where Ashley is more solid.

Interesting to hear the Sweeney’s Men/Woods Band vibe in a lot of this. There’s a rhythmic quality here that reminds me much of the Woods Band. And I just came off listening, once again, to Tim and Maddy’s “Summer Solstice” LP-I can hear that bubbling up here too, though this is earthy, muddy music, without the piping clarity of the Hart/Prior record.

That's because most folk songs were never written down. They had simple stories and a catchy, easy to play tune. They were passed from one person to the next and from one generation to the next. It's the simplicity of folk tunes that have made them so long lasting.

Hark! The Village Wait is the debut album by the British folk rock band Steeleye Span, first released in 1970. It is the only album to feature the original lineup of the band as they broke up and reformed with an altered membership immediately after its release, without ever having performed live. Therefore, it is one of only two Steeleye Span studio albums to feature two female vocalists (Maddy Prior and Gay Woods), the other being Time (1996). A similar sound was apparent years later when Prior teamed up with June Tabor to form Silly Sisters. Overall, the album's sound is essentially folk music with rock drumming and bass guitar added to some of the songs. Track listing All songs traditional, except where noted. I'm thoroughly enjoying your selection of LPs, Tony. I grew up with the early material of Steeleye Span, which my Mother loves. I have her original 1970 LP safe in my collection, and I must say I prefer it to my CD copy, the sound is 'warmer'. She went off SS when they became too commercial, during the Mike Batt era. From this album, 'The Blackleg Miner' has always been my favourite.

Eddi Reader's version of "The Blacksmith" on her "Mirmama" album with the patron saints of imperfection, is also astounding, really haunting !

Steeleye . . . Fotheringay, Sandy Denny, Fairport, Ian Matthews . . . I was much more into Yes, Genesis and King Crimson at the time, but the English folk component sneaked into my heart and never left. How quaint and English it all sounds now. Incredible that music devolved into what it is today; the early 70s was a seminal period for music of all types-yes, even Englebert Humperdinck. Damn, I'm old.

Tidal recommended "Lowlands of Holland" to me at first and then I spent the rest of the day listening to it over and over, with about 75% of that playing The Blacksmith repeatedly. The way she says "cheeks" is so cute. These crystalline-voiced ladies are my favorite. Oh yeah, commenting on a 10 year old video for the win. It's fine, the album is older than me anyway.

With 😊the early stuff l like imagining l am being treated to a live performance of the good auld tunes by a scruffy, brilliant bunch of street buskers who are thinking of starting up a band….

I could just listen to early Steeleye Span, Nic Jones and Andy Cutting and not really bother with other folk music apart from in pubs and stuff - maybe Voice Squad too

Interesting too that Ashley Hutchings’s concept for a new band was to recruit two singing duos and to take such a subtle, background role. Bass playing is great, of course.
