Superb as ever. I feel so lucky to have been with this bunch of ever changing hyper talented muscicans since they started out. Just simply magical.

I've also been into them since the early 70s. They have a unique quality, identity only a small number of groups of ANY genre ever achieve. They conjure up magic from the earth, from themslves, from our collective history

Love this!!! Saw them in December the night before Bob passed away. Maddy herself told me he was unwell.😢 Can't wait to see them again in a few weeks

That middle 8 is sensational!! The rest isn’t bad either!

Hardly a compliment.

What's not complimentary about "sensational"?
@maxwellfan557 ай бұрын
@@chrismorris9087 Complimenting only the small, middle part of the song, then describing the rest as "not bad". Just they way it comes across.
@geoffbaker44527 ай бұрын
I think the " not bad" was meant to be ironic. In other words, it's pretty good.
@maxwellfan557 ай бұрын
@@geoffbaker4452 ...if you say so. Steeleye lost their way decades ago. This hybrid attempt at anything resembling folk music is just awful, and once glorious Maddy sounds terrible nowadays, bless her. Just my opinion.

Saw them in Carlisle last week for the 54th time ! Very impressed with Athena Octavia who has fitted in well after Jessie May. A little concerned about Maddy's voice but, as ever, a superb set.

Dunno what this is, but it ain't trad, dad. Steeleye gone as far from folk as you can get, now just a wrinkly, soft rock band. Save the fiddle. All great musicians tho', particularly that awesome drummer.

They are a FOLK ROCK band!! Saw them last week,excellent,and Athena is the icing on the cake.A superb violinist.

Folk rock is what it is ...have you ever listened to the 70s Steeleye sound?..clearly not
@maxwellfan555 ай бұрын
@@jobsworthism You ask a question, then answer it for me? 😄 Yes, I bought most of the albums, some had very good songs, many more had shockingly bad arrangements. Fine, but the more "rock" orientated they became the more bazaar it sounded, particularly with bass through a fuzz pedal, ffs. We all know they just did it for the money, lovers of traditional folk at heart, but in the end Tim chucked it in and their quest to be popular and fell flat on its face. Now people go to chalk off their ("saw them at...") list, not because Maddy (one of the greatest) can sing anymore. Listen if you will, for me, it not only destroys worthy traditional melodies, it's trash of the worst taste. Does that explain it?
@jobsworthism5 ай бұрын
@@maxwellfan55 it explains it just fine .. completely disagree with you but respect to your opinion .. I love the folk rock sound as I do the traditional sound.. I’m off to see Martin Carthy soon .. he used electric guitar for a while
@maxwellfan555 ай бұрын
@@jobsworthism Yes, Carthy is a class act of his own, ever since that amazing 1966 first album, many which I still play out on guitar. I don't like his politics which he wears on his sleeve, but that's another matter. I'm simply amazed he is still gigging. Last time I saw him a few years ago he looked completely shagged out.

What can I say I've just seen this last Friday being performed in St Albans it was absolutely fantastic. the whole concert the new filingist just blew me away. If the tour with the lineup and setlist came out on a CD or a DVD I would definitely get it because it was one of those sets that made me think wow.
@RickGrafham-Kaminski6 ай бұрын
I was there too an excellent gig and last saw them at the same venue in 1996,when they had the two vocalists,Maddy and Gaye. Overall,vocals were a bit better the first time,but this lineup was better instrumentally and really rocked out at times.Also,Athena is a huge asset to the band.I would also be interested in a CD/DVD of this gig,if it became available😊
@RickGrafham-Kaminski6 ай бұрын
P.S.Of course the great Bob Johnson was with them in 1996 and Peter Knight too.I love fusion violin playing going back to Peter and other great players such as David LaFlamme of It's a Beautiful Day,Michal Urbaniak,one of the first to play electric violin,Didier Lockwood of Magma and Dave Arbus in East of Eden.Also,Dave Swarbrick of Fairport Convention.Also,Sophie Trudeau of Canadian band,Godspeed You.Great fusion violinists are pearls beyond price,so Athena is following a great tradition.Actually'I first saw Liam,the drummer,many years ago in a jazz fusion band called Zzebra.😊
