When bead Fishing I was taught a long time ago to NOT set the hook, just reel down and let the fish hook itself. I’m sure you can still hook up but try and just use the reel with a light drag.
@AutomagicFishing
@AutomagicFishing Ай бұрын
People have told me that so many times. I am skeptic. Honestly, I think that there is a different reason besides the fish getting hooked that people recommend reeling down first. I think that has been passed down from most fishing guides because their clients are not mending their line well or there’s too much of a belly hit the line. When they set the hook, they pull nothing but line back behind their head which creates tip wrap. You still might hook the fish, but then you’ve gotta deal with the tip of your ride getting broken with a fish on. Easier just to tell people to reel down first. If I’m on point, and I see the fish take it, my hook ups aren’t too bad.

@@AutomagicFishingI was thought, "Reel till you feel, then swing on it." That has done well by me. I use Raven bead hooks, which increased my landing ratio significantly.

Yeah, it's steelhead time...almost! Pesky coho's! Looked like fun, though. The bead drew the first fish there. Really low water is a challenge for anyone. That #5 Vibrax is worth 6 or 7 bucks, I'd say! Sunken treasure, Brian! These early trips can serve multiple ways. An angler can shake off the rust in his casting, knot tying, and hookset reaction time, among others. You popped the cherry on that new rod! A virgin rod is deadly, from my experience. I hope you at least bought her dinner! 😂 Maybe a little shot of rain will bring in some chrome steelies! Thanks, Brian!
@AutomagicFishing
@AutomagicFishing Ай бұрын
Hey, thanks William! Yeah, it’s definitely important to start fishing early as a good shakedown trip. Also, it’s nice to refresh my memory of what the river bottom looks like before it gets full of green water. It’s interesting because I fished that spinning rod before, but that reel is brand new to me and so it was nice to be able to get a fish with the spinner a couple times

@AutomagicFishing
@AutomagicFishing Ай бұрын
Tom, it seems like even if we had a bunch of rain early, fish have a certain schedule there regardless of water level. I was assuming there would be some fish already up in the river system since we had so much rain the last couple weeks. I was wrong.

@AutomagicFishing
@AutomagicFishing Ай бұрын
Tyson, definitely the number one advice I could give is don’t give up keep fishing. If you think you’re fishing correctly and you’re not getting bites, slowly adjust yourself so you’re deeper. Do that until you start getting snagged. And then adjust it back up a little bit. If you’re still not catching fish and you’re doing things right they’re probably aren’t any fish there. If there are fish there, maybe you’re not doing something right

Pro tip: please avoid unhooking a coho with your hands. Was watching on TV but had to comment because when your fishing a river that heads to a hatchery.. you don't have to move as often because pods of fish are always moving up all the time. So by moving spots you can miss a pod of fish that moved up from down below. I see pods move up two to three times in like a 2 to three hours span. But I'm not much for bank fishing.. I fall to much..
@AutomagicFishing
@AutomagicFishing Ай бұрын
Thanks for the advice on that! It’s always a bit of a mystery. Best strategy is to slowly work down river trying each pocket. Suppose that’s how the term low holing people comes from.
