Steelhead Fishing on the Famed North Umpqua River

Only certain rivers on the West Coast get serious steelhead fishermen to bend an ear and turn their heads when mentioned. Rivers in Canada, the Olympic Peninsula and of course the North Umpqua. Don't get me wrong you can catch trophy sized steelhead almost anywhere but in these special places you already know they are waiting for you. A century ago Zane Grey immortalized the North Umpqua through his writings. Places like Steamboat Inn and guides like Frank Moore are iconic to the area.

What ever happened to, 'keep your rod tip high?' I keep the rod butt under my forearm and the rod stays high. Makes fighting and netting so much easier
