I totally agree with your fluro and braid theories, 100%. Good mono has good shock-absorbing qualities. I won't use fluro leaders even when I'm chucking gear, it's just too brittle. I live on Vancouver Island and have been fishing plugs(mostly Hotshots) for close to 40 years. The plugs work very well here at times. Our regs permit one single barbless hook/angler, one rod/angler and wild fish release. If I fished your gear I'd be fouling and hanging up much more often and I hate losing plugs. You might be pleasantly surprised by how clean and effective the single hook is. The right hook in the right place can be deadly and it can do a really nice job of balancing the plug. My hooking and holding percentages are pretty good. I also catch a lot of fish on anchor just paying my plugs down slowly into the run. You have to anchor in the right spot and then work a pair or three plugs by "sweeping" the run as you drop them through. A lot of times you will back the fish up into the tail out and bam. My guests also get to feel like they are doing the fishing with the rod in hand. Once I've given the run a good 'sweep' I pull up anchor and put the rods in the holders and back troll to my next spot. The only other west coast thing I can tell you is that black is my go-to colour, even to the point where I'll break out the black spray-paint to restore the finish on a battered plug. I don't know why but I really don't need any other colours even in varying water conditions. I fish black all the time. Cheers. :)

Great info thanks! You live in a beautiful part of the world!!! I have been experimenting with single hooks on the plugs a bit. Interesting on the black plug color. I will have to try more black, we use alot of black spey flies it makes sense that it would be effective, we have alot of sculpin and gobies in our rivers that dteelhead feed on thru the winter that are dark almost black color. I will give it a go. Thank again! TF

@@bluelineoutdoors2726 You might find this hard to believe but I'm envious of your Great Lakes Steelhead fishery. In the last 30 years or so our coast and estuaries have been overrun by Seals and Sea Lions and our Steelhead runs are at historical lows. It's a little better up north but who knows when it will turn around. Last season was terrible. I'm sending you a link to a cool vid of my local river from 2016, the 'Cowichan'. It's a fertile system and I've seen fish taken over 30 lbs! I'm not in the vid but they are friends of mine. As far as single hooks go, I like a black nickel Mustad open-eye Siwash which I rig with a black barrel swivel and a small split ring. I match my hook size with my plug size. On a #40 Hotshot I use a 2/0 hook. Nice chatting, not too many folks around that I can have a nuanced discussion about Steelhead plugs!. :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2PQqY2bltODeZI

Years of academy training wasted...I could have been plug fishing and drinking Tar Heel teas with Mrs. Nesbit. Kidding aside, this is the real life afirming stuff that bares the good weight of hard work and reward. Thank the Lord for youtube. Seek and you shall find your teacher.

I would bet it was vanish flourocarbon. My brother used it one time out steelhead fishing and all of his fish vanished.
