The scenario is a native New Yorker who's living and working in LA, in drug rehab, homesick, and sick of his lifestyle in southern California. The five names are the original members of the Steely Dan Band, some of whom are no longer part of the band. sthe references are to the music business scene in LA and some of the original band members no longer part of Steely Dan. He's talking to Walter Becker. The chorus describes a vision of himself back home, when he didn't spend money on fancy shoes (so he's wearing "bad sneakers," maybe worn-out Converse high-tops) but roamed around Manhattan. Magnolia Boulevard is in North Hollywood, and the site of a number of medical offices, including more than one rehab clinic. The ladies are prostitutes, street-walkers who aren't making as much money, or not enough to feed their drug habits. The "fearsome excavation" is some construction site. The "ditch" in the valley is a metaphor for a career dead-end he fears music company executives will force him into, as well as the grave he might be buried in if he continues to rely on drugs to deal with his stress and creative unhappiness.

2 words. Chuck. Rainey. At least after a certain point. Most other positions, they rotated different studio musicians, Chuck was the man on call for bass, they didn't need anyone else unless Walter wanted to play it himself. Chuck played some or all of the songs from Pretzel Logic to Gaucho, with a few songs by Anthony Jackson on Gaucho, some by Wilton Felder on Pretzel Logic and Katy Lied. Chuck was pretty much the sound of that good good 76-77 period, with a hefty hand in the other times.

Dang, this song is so personal to me. Fresh from getting divorced and not really knowing where to go, I had to be in a training camp for a month and I literally brought an older pair of sneakers instead of a newer one. The training camp was essential for my career, but it was boring as hell and afterwards it took me away from the more fun and carefree life that I used to know, and to have to experience it all alone was so so sad. Former Dan guitarist Skunk Baxter once said that having McDonald with Steely Dan was the most underutilized and waste of talents in the history of music. michael mcdonald was writing songs for other artists when steely dan brought him in to sing backup on some tracks for the katy lied album. i actually got to see steely dan and michael mcdonald in concert back in august of 2006. it was one of the best shows i've ever been to. midway through steely dan's set, michael mcdonald came out and sang lead for 3 or 4 songs. i met some dudes on the lawn who kept passing me joints and blunts all night. i'm not exaggerating when i say that every song played, they sparked up something new, even if something else was still rolling. plus i had baked 2 bowls to myself in my car before i walked in. it might be the highest i've ever been. the concert was about an hour and a half from my house. i got home around 3:30 and got up at 5 to go to work the next morning. needless to say i was worthless at work. hahaha. man! that was a good time!

Another great Steely song and I've listened to it at least a couple hundred times and never realized Michael was singing in the background until the moment you said it 😊

Steely Dan was originally from New York city. They moved to LA to record several albums, but they were always longing to get back to their NY home.

yep, MM was recruited into Steely Dan by Jeff Porcaro, toured with them as a member until around 1974, was fired along with the rest of the touring band (including future Doobie bandmate Jeff Baxter), but brought back for studio work starting with the Katy Lied album and onwards.

Yes, was a beautiful written song that didn't get alot of play time on the radio. But we listened to this song alot. We were Steely Dan junkies. I saw them this past June at the Hollywood Bowl. It was amazing they haven't change. Other than the loss of Walter Becker. Had two tickets for Jamal. Never connected with you brother. Steely Dan was the 70s for us. One of the Greatest bands of all time hand's down

Michael McDonald's vocals on the song are some of his first for the band; he would continue to perform background vocals for the band in recordings until 1980

Great Fact: on Steely Dan's "Peg" Michael McDonald actually harmonized with his own voice three different ways and overdubbed the track. You can look up a behind the scenes documentary with them on KZbin... their attention to detail is incredible.

Good ears Jamel! You recognized Michael McDonald (MM). Here's the thing with Steely Dan and MM; Michael was an unofficial member of Steely Dan at this point in the band's evolution. Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers have a history of joint membership. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter played guitar in Steely Dan on their first few albums; then he left to join the Doobie Brothers. When Tom Johnston took ill in '75 and had to leave the Doobies, it was Jeff Baxter who recommended Michael McDonald be considered as Johnston's replacement. Also worth noting is that Jeff Porcaro - who played drums on all the tracks on Katy Lied, including this one - was the drummer on Michael McDonald's solo recording "I Keep Forgetting". Jeff is on many of Steely Dan's songs; and every time you check out a song with Jeff Porcaro on it; you dance with a bit more bounce! Jeff was also the cofounder and drummer in Toto. He passed away in 1992.

This SD album had its share of production problems. For an interesting story by one of the band member about the making of this album, search for an article called "Katy and the Gremlin" by SD guitarist Denny Dias. A good read.
