The scenario is a native New Yorker who's living and working in LA, in drug rehab, homesick, and sick of his lifestyle in southern California. The five names are the original members of the Steely Dan Band, some of whom are no longer part of the band. sthe references are to the music business scene in LA and some of the original band members no longer part of Steely Dan. He's talking to Walter Becker. The chorus describes a vision of himself back home, when he didn't spend money on fancy shoes (so he's wearing "bad sneakers," maybe worn-out Converse high-tops) but roamed around Manhattan. Magnolia Boulevard is in North Hollywood, and the site of a number of medical offices, including more than one rehab clinic. The ladies are prostitutes, street-walkers who aren't making as much money, or not enough to feed their drug habits. The "fearsome excavation" is some construction site. The "ditch" in the valley is a metaphor for a career dead-end he fears music company executives will force him into, as well as the grave he might be buried in if he continues to rely on drugs to deal with his stress and creative unhappiness.

Good ears Jamel! You recognized Michael McDonald (MM). Here's the thing with Steely Dan and MM; Michael was an unofficial member of Steely Dan at this point in the band's evolution. Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers have a history of joint membership. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter played guitar in Steely Dan on their first few albums; then he left to join the Doobie Brothers. When Tom Johnston took ill in '75 and had to leave the Doobies, it was Jeff Baxter who recommended Michael McDonald be considered as Johnston's replacement. Also worth noting is that Jeff Porcaro - who played drums on all the tracks on Katy Lied, including this one - was the drummer on Michael McDonald's solo recording "I Keep Forgetting". Jeff is on many of Steely Dan's songs; and every time you check out a song with Jeff Porcaro on it; you dance with a bit more bounce! Jeff was also the cofounder and drummer in Toto. He passed away in 1992.

New Gen X subscriber here. Love me some Steely. "I've Got the News" is a good Michael McDonald tune. Enjoy man!

Just so good! If I could only listen to one group for the rest of my life I'd have to go with Steely Dan.

This SD album had its share of production problems. For an interesting story by one of the band member about the making of this album, search for an article called "Katy and the Gremlin" by SD guitarist Denny Dias. A good read.
