I always loved the Aja album - it came out when I was a sophomore in college! Black Cow has a great groove. When I was a kid we would order a black cow in a local ice cream shop (vanilla ice cream with root beer). Thank you for the “groovy” reaction! 😊

It's actually the woman who is intoxicated with a blend of drugs and alcohol and he is the one who is trying to make everything right but sadly he had to move on as she was beyond his help. The funkiest and coolest break up songs ever!

And it was mostly the drugs, not the drinking. "On the counter by your keys was a book of numbers and your remedies." Meaning, dealer phone numbers, and preferred drugs. "One of these surely will screen out the sorrow... but where are you tomorrow?"

Rudy's Bar still exists here in NYC. The owner just died a few days ago, but the bar is still thriving. It still is, now as it was then, mostly a dive bar. Then, when the pro's still strolled 42nd, it was a hang out for locals, artists, Broadway actors, and pro's who mingled.

This song has all these great elements that I love, but could be that it's 1:30am on a Saturday and I'm getting ready for work, watching this video with bleary eyes, but it isn't hitting me like it should. I'll have to listen again when I'm properly awake !!!

Aja is one of those albums that everyone I knew liked in the 70's & it was worthy of being liked. Scottish band Deacon Blue took their name from a song on it & future Doobie singer Michael McDonald is prominent on Peg. Great musicianship & harmonies.

For those over a certain age (hand raised), a black cow is an old-fashioned fountain drink. Root beer with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the top. Pure bliss.

Such a great band, 'Steely Dan', they have many great tracks, I won't suggest any as you have plenty of suggestions from me which you're yet to do. If you're interested in samples, Chris, then I suggest a Northern Soul track I suggested, "Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons - Beggin'".

Don't blame the man....the woman is the one running around in this one.. The album AJA was sampled extensively.. Black Cow- Sampled in 14 other artists recordings Peg- Sampled in 22 But I prefer to listen to Steely Dan- complete, as created - not just borrowed bits...why have chicken nuggets in cRAP when you can have the whole bird prepared to perfection in it's original source...

Cocal Cola (or RC, or Pepsi) and Vanilla ice cream, typical of Soda Fountains of the 1950s, ' 60s and some Diners of the 1970s.... Originally a non alcoholic, but I've heard there are modern, Bar versions w/ added Bourbon or Scotch or Brandy in it.
