Your absolutely right....you can't go wrong with Steely Dan . I'm a 62 year old black male and been listening and grooving to Steely Dan since the 70's. They are great and the musicians they use for recording are the best out there. Steely Dan is two people Donald Fagan and Walter Becker( R. I. P. ). Listen to more,enjoy and you'll dig them even more......peace

The day I quit my last job (almost 12 years of BS) I walked out, drove straight to Walmart and bought an inflatable pool, and a case of beer. Spent the rest of that summer in my backyard floating and drinking beer....and listening to Steely Dan on repeat. 😎✌️💜💚💛

The Album Aja is a masterpiece, another album that I wore out more than once after I bought it on vinyl back in 1977, always have been a huge Steely Dan fan, you want another one of their songs to react to? Just pick one kiddo they are all great.

I’m 73 and I bought this album on cassette because that’s all they had then. I’m driving on Hyw 101 headed north to Mendocino county in my new Porsche mid engine and was playing Deacon Blues. I stopped to pick up a couple of young 20 somethings and they were headed to see Jim Jones. They died a few yrs later after drinking poisoned cool aid. But they loved this song too. I recommend getting on the freeway and playing Deacon Blues while you drive down that road.

Thanks for spreading the word, you “get it!” So many reviewers over-analyze lyrics, or stare at a video when listening to this and other steely Dan masterpieces, and they don’t get it! Not only do you have so many more steely Dan albums to check out, but don’t forget Donald Fagen‘s solo albums, starting with his 1982 classic, THE NIGHTFLY.

Another great Steely Dan song is the title track of their fifth album, The Royal Scam. Where Deacon Blues was kind of upbeat, the lyrics were kind of dark when you really listen to them, The Royal Scam is very dark. But it is definitely a great song. And if you like music with some great sax in it, check out Carole King's Jazzman. A classic from the mid 1970s.

Well hello there you, the coolest song, ever! The best lyrics, production, musicians and vocalists, of all time. And ITZJT TV, I enjoyed your reaction and commentary to Steely Dan’s music. Oh, and they mention my team, “The Alabama Crimson Tide.” We just won our 28th SEC Football Championship, two days a ago. Don’t get no cooler than this, y’all. 😏😎❤️

When I was about 18, a musician I dated turned me on to Steely Dan (I am a 62 year OLD woman!) although I had already heard the radio commercial type hits, which honestly are fair to middling. The year this album came out I listened to it over and over...it drove my man insane! I even named a dog we had back then Aja. As you can see my name here is BabylonSis after another one of their greats. Here is the live version : kzbin.info/www/bejne/gH65fHSFrrmIm5Y. One of the earlier songs I fell in love with is from the Royal Scam album, Kid Charlemagne and since it's a bit tricky to understand, here is some background info on what the song is about. The guy he is referring to had a chemical engineering background and produced mass quantities of LSD within two short years he had manufactured just over 5 million doses. He was also the sound guy for the Grateful Dead. Name Owsley Stanley, grandchild of Kentucky politician. Another live version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6nEmJWFlMqkbpY Godspeed on your musical journey!

I "learn[ed] to work the saxophone" (alto) in 1967, found you could make money doing it, and never looked back. Even though I don't always get to "play just what I feel," and don't "drink Scotch whiskey all night long," I've yet to "die behind the wheel". Best. Leo.

If you pay attention to the lyrics, that saxophone that comes in during the instrumental bridge is the character in the song. Donald had a truly masterful plan for this song in advance for this recording. The saxophonist, Donald and Walter heard him playing on TV, knew they had to get him for the part. They called him up, and he said, "let me listen to the studio tracks to get a feel for it" and after he did so, he only took one take to get it just the way they wanted it. For comparison, they would get take after take from all of their musicians to make sure it sounded exactly like they thought it should.

Some of the Funkiest white bands are contemporaries of Steely Dan. Average White Band's "Walk On By" and "Lowdown" by Boz Scaggs. The mid 1970's didn't make any difference what genre of music we listened to. I seriously remember spending money on Brazilian Bossa Nova. Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66.

Actually, Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go are technically better than the 70s stuff. The music is even more complex and sophisticated and they kept pushing the envelope every album. I love all the Steely Dan albums including the Donald Fagen solo albums.

Two against nature is a fantastic album. If you think they are bad songs you probably don’t understand them musically.
@mikewritz4 жыл бұрын
Dude, I wouldn’t even say there is a “bad” song on either of their later albums. “Two Against Nature” even won the Grammy for album of the year. I agree that I don’t like those 2 albums as much as their pre 1980s albums but there are gems on both of those albums. I wouldn’t expect an album to sound like an album from 20+ years earlier, just saying. Give them another listen.
