The genius of Steely Dan is that they were secretly a jazz band all along. They just managed to sneak jazz in as pop.

What do you use as reference? Steely Dan are well known everywhere, especially among musicians. Non-musician friends my age are hit or miss, but we're only in our early 20s. When I studied music, EVERYONE knew and loved the Dan. Didn't matter if you were 15 or 75, working or studying at that school, they were very looked up to. When my son was 8 years old (9 years ago) I took my son to his first concert, Steely Dan. He was familiar with their music because I had been playing it all his life. He knew every song they played and the fans around us were amazed at this little kid standing in his chair knows ALL the songs. We Love The Dan!

Brings back great memories of the summer of 77/78 when I ran a little wild and my parents never knew. Steely Dans was the play track to the fun.

This song. Holy 🐄. It’s iconic. He’s so darn awesome. This is when music was true music. Underrated for sure!

Every time I hear this song a smile comes to my face... could be in a terrible mood, but this song is an instant game changer. SD is probably the most under valued rock band in my lifetime. RIP Walter Becker

The best description I EVER heard to describe Steely Dan's music was one word... "Complex". The music is so deep and intricate. Every sound has a purpose.

One of those songs that you specifically remember hearing as a child (my dad's radio). I was age 4 when I first heard it, and it's my favorite Steely Dan song today.

I feel the 70's were FULL of QUALITY (Hit and Non-hit) music of a variety of flavours/flavors which began in the 1950's going right thru the 70's and inching across what some would consider 'The Finish Line' by early to mid 1980's. Either way, some of us didn't know how good we had it.

The musicians back then were more talented. Didnt need alot of electronic music just a fender and a hammond organ.

Just a little Steely Dan trivia for you - While in college, Donald Fagan and Walter Becker were in a band that was the precursor of Steely Dan called Leather Canary, Chevy Chase was their drummer.

Love watching your reaction to Steely Dan. Watching you is like I'm looking in the mirror at myself about 35 years ago. Thank you Jamel. It reminds what it felt like when I fell in love with this band. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE watch the video of The Royal Scam w/lyrics. It is sad and haunting. When I deeply listened to this song several years ago, it stuck with me for a couple of weeks.

I think they require more processing power than some other bands. Subtle and not allways predictable. Kind of diametrically opposed to Free Bird. This is adult music at it's best. It's not for everyone. But I am a 40+ year SD head.

Dude, you have one of my absolutely FAVORITE Shows on KZbin! Keep on Rollin’. These Guys are one of the Groups who got me into Jazz. My 1st Jazz Album was Bitches Brew, that I bought by mistake, mixing Miles up with Buddy Miles. I freaked out on that and took off from there. THEN I found The Legendary Stockholm Concert. The greatest Album of all Time.
