It was 2 AM, I couldn't sleep and, at 73, I've got no place I have to go in the morning, except to shover the snow around the mail box so we can get mail. We got at least 16 inches of snow on Friday. Anyway, from 2 AM until now, approaching 4:30 AM, I've done nothing but listen and watch your reactions to Steely Dan tunes. It's been damned great fun, so thank-you. It was a blast being a college radio DJ on a FM radio station. FM (frequency modulation) was definitely cleaner than AM(amplitude modulation) in over the air radio.

As a kid who grew up in the 60s listening to music on a tiny AM transistor radio this song holds special meaning. First we moved from AM to FM mono and were so thrilled with the static free sound. Then FM stereo came along and we were transported. My dad got a new Chevy in 1967 which was our first car with FM radio and it had a stereo adapter bolted under the dash. The sound was incredible. Could not wait for dad to get home from work so I could plop my self down in the middle seat and crank up the music. Such great memories. Does anyone here remember WDVE 102.5 in Pittsburgh from that era ? Their DJs were incredible.

I'm really glad that you chose to go with the version of this song with the saxophone outro. Interestingly, there are four versions of this song. The original album cut is around 5 minutes long and features a guitar outro by Walter Becker. There is also a single version which is around 4 minutes long with a shortened sax solo in the middle and the b-side of that single is the sax outro that you heard. This version that you listened to is, in my opinion, the best version of the song. It is the full length, original album cut, but the guitar outro was replaced with the sax outro that served as the b-side for the single version.

I remember going to visit my family in Philly in 1980. My cousin had prog faves like Tubular Bells and Dark Side of The Moon. I gravitated towards his FM soundtrack. We ended up playing that album BUT especially the title track by The Dan! Their manager Irving Azoff was behind the film. Though he disowned it after it came out. He got a lot of his artists on the soundtrack. Including The Dan,Boz Scaggs and The Eagles. As a matter of fact. Glenn Frey,Don Henley and Tim Schmitt of The Eagles sing backup on Steely Dan's FM. As for the instrumental part, Becker plays bass and guitar on this track. He really woodsheds on this song. Pete Christlieb who played sax played with the Tonight Show Band. He also played the solo on Deacon Blues. Nick as a guitarist I think you will be impressed by Larry Carlton's work on The Royal Scam. Especially on Kid Charlemagne and Don't Take Me Alive. Interested to see both of your reactions to that song.

I find this interesting, that your appreciation for Steely Dan has reignited a passion for their music…..in me. Playing in rock bands back in the 70’s, I was aware of Steely Dan, but was never really into them. They were so different from the mainstream rock genera that they kind of slid under the radar, so to speak. In east coast Canada, FM radio was for classical music, and boring talk radio programming. A few of my friends were very in to SD, but they were a different social group and I found them kind of snobbish, so I tended not to take their advice on musical matters. While I was into rock at that time......and disco was very popular at that time also......this type of music introduced me to jazz...and I was hooked. This was the longer version. Back then radio stations only played the shorter version.

This song is absolutely brilliant. 1979, my first 3 vinyl records were Pink Floyd, The wall Supertramp, Breakfast in America and Steely Dan, Greatest Hits. In the very early 80's, New Zealand was being introduced to fm radio. Certainly made your recording from the radio to tape cassette a lot more enjoyable to listen to. Fell in love with Steely Dan, still enjoying this unique sound more than 40 years on. FM is one my favourite songs of all time.

When I was in high school in the70's a friend of mine said your favorite band's favorite band is probably steely Dan so I checked them out, and I can't stop listening to this day

Excellent choice, you two! This was one of the first songs of theirs I heard, other than "Do It Again," which I feel is probably a lot of people's first SD song.

Yes, funky. I LOVE how they do funk. You two are a blast to watch when I know the song. Her smile. His lip bite and air bass. SO much fun to watch.

Pete Christlieb played tenor sax in the Tonight Show band. He played with a lot of greats, but I was always amazed that they were so aware of the music scene that they could even think of using him.

1978 was the year I really started to take my music listening seriously. "FM" caused me to notice that Steely Dan as a great band. That's when I bought all the older albums. They have been one of my favorite bands ever since. And Nick, if you are like me, "FM" will remain your favorite SD song.

I saw the movie this is from when it first came out and remember enjoying the soundtrack, but it took me several decades to appreciate how good it really is.

There's another Steely movie soundtrack or two you should watch for. From the movie "Heavy Metal"... oddly is a very lush, non-metal, Donald deep-dive creation -True Companion. And they have another hidden gem from the movie "Bright Lights, Big City"(in early 90's) called Centuries End. Very tasty. I am with some other commenters here, that Royal Scam should be your next album.

Wow! I TOTALLY forgot that song is on the Heavy Metal soundtrack! Also hilarious that the only track on the album that is really "Heavy Metal" is "Mob Rules" by Sabbath . . . . maybe Sammy Hagar's "Heavy Metal" and BOC "Heavy Metal (the Black and Silver)".

Love your reactions to FM. I have listened to FM thousands of time and very fortunate to attend many Steely Dan and Donald Fagen live performances. A couple of those performances they had an encore session where they played the long version of FM. It is actually amazing and a thrill of a lifetime for me to experience that fantastic feeling that FM elicits. It always brings chills to my body every time I hear FM. I have been and will always be a Steely Dan and Donald fan. I have everything he has ever done.

So fun to watch you react to Steely Dan. Please listen to "New Frontier" from Donald's "The Nightfly". I know you will absolutely love the bass on that tune. Also, you need to hit some of the songs from "The Royal Scam". Two of my favorites are "Kid Charlamagne" and "Don't Take Me Alive". They feature Larry Carlton (Mr. 335) on lead guitar and the legendary Bernard Purdie on the drums.

This was the theme to the film FM (1978). It opens the movie, which is about a radio station. The soundtrack features every big band from the time---Doobie Brothers, Tom Petty, Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac...etc

From the 'Gold' compilation, you might want to do a reaction to "True Companion," a relatively lesser known, but lovely, song from their catalog.
