Steely Dan ~ FM (No Static At All) 1978 Classic Rock Purrfection Version

Surprise! I thought you might enjoy the soothing sound of Steely Dan's "FM" I know it is late in the day but a bit of chill might make it onto your menu. Have you seen "FM"? There was some chatter going around that this movie inspired WKRP In Cincinnatti. Really great and current collection (at the time) all genres and two LIVE Linda Ronstadt tunes!
The opening tune was written specifically for the movie and they finished it in two days bringing in Arranger Johnny Mandel a five time Grammy winning composer who helped define the rich orchestral sounds behind Count Basie and Frank Sinatra to arrange the strings. Steely Dan really paid tribute to the man's enduring talent by including him.
"FM" was released while the duo were still promoting the wildly popular "Aja" from 1977. As soon as "Deacon Blues" started dropping, "FM (No Static At All) was issued and it eventually peaked at #22. Then "Josie" was dropped in September and realized I was constantly listening to a Steely Dan tune from the September before when "Aja" was brand new.
I love these guys! Walter Becker produced two albums in the 80's that bear his mark for Rosie Vela "Zazu" and China Crisis "Flaunt The Imperfection". Rosie's hit was "Magic Smile" and the entire China Crisis album, they made Walter a member of the ban and he came through in spades. Its a wonderful jazzy funk and all the songs are well written and produced, It is one of my summer go to's, another one is Chris Rea's 1986 "On The Beach"...takes me away everytime.

I was 15 years old when this beautiful song played on Chicago WXRT-FM. I was already a Steely Dan fan but the production of 'FM' was so cool, tight, and crisp and stood out amongst the more top 40 content at the time. Koss over the ear headphones and dreams is all I needed to imagine what the future held in-store. I may sound like an old man by saying this but it must be said: there are 'performers' BUT there are 'artists' (a distinction with a huge difference). We need to foster/support the next generations of Walter Becker and Donald Fagens with freedom and opportunity not to conform.

The farther we get from the prime years of Steely Dan, the greater their legendary status becomes. What genius, what swing, even the deliberately arcane lyrics make more sense now. And I remember Rosie Vela fondly. She and Jeff Lynne had a pied-à-terre in downtown NYC in the early 2000s, a couple of blocks from where I lived at the time.

I'm 72 years old. I remember Steely Dan but I was not all that into them in 1978. I didn't dislike them I was just indifferent. But now in 2024 I'm a big fan. I know they were originally from the east coast but their music was just so west coast. I lived on the coast then. I listen to this song and I'm driving in the sunsetting while cruising along the 405 once more. The fog coming, etc love it,

No FM radio actually blew up in the early to mid 1970s. You started hearing more than 3 minute singles from the prior decades plus radio djs started playing album cuts that were not record label released singles. You are correct that am radio was still king when the 1970s started! By the middle of the decade FM had made its mark though. B cool

9am on a Wed morning and I have this playing while I get some work done :-) I remember the Movie but this was one of the first pieced I taped from radio as a kid and I played it to death until I bought the soundtrack album a few years later. Great, great song from the spring of my senior year in High School. Interestingly enough, growing up in rural Nebraska, AM radio was about all I had to listen to at that time. Not till I left for college the following fall did I have many FM listening opportunities. 59 WOW/Omaha was the AM station of choice for Top 40 and you could pick it up 250 miles away during the daytime. They edited this song (as ther AM's may have), to remove the lyric "FM" and replace it with the instrumental backing from the flipside. Song was always introduced on that station simply as "No Static At All". Great record with or without "FM"!

This was a great soundtrack album! I bought it in the fall of 78 without having seen the movie. Did not see FM until about ten years later on VHS. Movie was nothing much, soundtrack still great though. A perfect snapshot of what was actually on the radio at that time.

True... Most of us connected to the soundtrack in 1978 but for the movie so... so..... The post production work is where Steely Dan truly shined. There is a great KZbin channel that takes these beautiful songs are analyzes them from a production perspective (with the actual producers) at the mixer.
