I saw them in 2000 at Jones Beach N.Y. 3rd row. Kansas opened for them. Was perfection. They should be seen outside on a summer night with a nice breeze. I loved every second. They sounded so outrageous! 🎶❤🎶

Fantastic, just such a iconic and wonderfully put together idea of a band. Fagen and Becker decided early on to put the absolute best studio stuff out possible and make a living on record sales. You could really do that back then. They would go out and find the best studio and session musicians in the world to play the parts. The guitar solo here on Kid Charlemagne was done on the album by a session guitarist named Larry Carlton, and it was widely recognized as one of the best lead guitar solo's ever. That is not to in any way put down the wonderful work done here by Jon Herington. Wow. Good stuff

My wife and I were at this concert. We had a half-drunk guy next to us almost the entire concert who, after every song, would chant “Kid Charlemagne! Kid Charlemagne!” He finally got his wish towards the end of the song list. And it was worth waiting for.

There should be a mandatory minimum for daring to change one note of the original Larry Carlton solo. Cool solo. See you in 5 years.

I read an interview with Jon where he said Becker and Fagen told him he doesn't have to recreate the solos note for note but just match the feeling. Guess it works since he's always on the scene.

Certain things are only lessened when artistic freedom is allowed. You don’t interpret perfection with your own style, and anything that includes a Larry Carlton solo is perfection. And you don’t alter perfection!

What an outstanding performance by one of the best groups ever. Is Jon Herington not an amazing guitar virtuoso? I only wish that someone would have advised the backup singers which key the song is in.
@MikeSTUDIO-fg8wj
@MikeSTUDIO-fg8wj 2 жыл бұрын
Don’t forget he’s playing down a path that was cleared and cut by Larry. He’s literally just following the exact modal outline. It is likely the best guitar tone of all time however, if there is any virtuosity herein it lies.

The video looks like it was shot on a flip phone with analog audio which is probably the reason the backup singers don't sound right. They are the same ones who have been performing with SD for years and can probably sing this song in their sleep. No matter though, I love this song no matter how it was recorded!!!
@rwefree9469
@rwefree9469 2 жыл бұрын
@@DocRockTheDj Maybe you were being facetious about the flip phone but this was a recording of the in-house feed to the video boards which was SD at the time. Bands usually send mono audio to the room. There were 4 cams, 2 with 55x lenses in “Crow’s Nests” on pillars out front and 2 handheld cams, one at the end of an aisle(that’s why you see audience blocking the shot at times), and one on stage right. Curious about who posted this. There would have been only one copy made and given to a rep of the band. I’m not objecting, just curious.

One thing you can say about Donald Fagen is he’s not just another pretty face, but then the same goes for his partner, Walter Becker as well. They weren’t your typical front men in a band, but fortunately got over their stage fright and made a lot of money touring. Wish I could see Fagan live now with Michael McDonald and Boz Skaggs who were touring as the “Dukes of September” a while back after Becker died.

Being that Augustus Owsley Stanley III aka Bear was the Grateful Dead's benefactor, and financed them when living in Watts, among other ways, i always hear the lyric, "Your low-rent friends are dead", is kind of a shot at them.
