This is the story of Owsley Stanley, an LSD maker and dealer, who was also a sound tech for the Grateful Dead, in the '60's. Look him up. When cocaine became the rage, LSD lost popularity (all the "white" men on the street). He was eventually busted when he ran out of gas (is there gas in the car?).

I work in a music store, and one day in around 2006/2007 we were playing this song on the stereo. Couple dudes walk in during the hook and one says “damn bro everybody sampling Kanye”.

Steely Dan is two guys Donald Fagen and Walter Becker (RIP) who hired the best studio musicians to record their albums. On this track the lead guitar was by Larry Carlton and the drums were the great Bernard Purdie. I've loved their music for over 50 years now and yes, it is timeless. This song is about a guy named Owsley Stanley who produced the best LSD on the west coast. He became famous and rich producing the drug. Eventually LSD fell out of favor to cocaine. He was a direct descendant of King Charlemagne of France. Hence the name Kid Charlemagne.

Every time i listen to this song there's a miniature version of me in my head reacting and dancing the way you just did! Every single aspect of this song is pure gold.... Charlemagne was a king and emperor of the holy Roman empire and was responsible for uniting Europe through conquest in the late 8th century and it's credited with ushering in a renaissance that impacted European history for centuries. Great reaction 🤟🔥

I see where you are coming from. But the original artist gets compensated. Speaking from a pure musical aspect? I just love hearing samples. It brings music to life in my opinion. There is a lot of songs that I would not know if it weren't for sampling. I just have a different few on it

Just caught your rxn video and enjoyed it quite a bit. Charlemagne was the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (I know very little of the man but here's a link to his wiki: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlemagne The protagonist in this song is based on a 1960s west coast drug dealer: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kid_Charlemagne#:~:text=The%20song%20tells%20the%20story,1960s%20on%20the%20West%20Coast. So, yeah, people of murky character. They make great protagonists!! Music recommendations? Find Talking Heads playing Life During Wartime live as part of the movie Stop Making Sense. Another fun recommendation: The Who playing Young Man Blues at the 1970 Isle of Wight festival.

You know the song is about Owsley, right? It is loosely based on the life of the guy who made LSD his business...hee hee. Really interesting person, Bear they called him, and he hung around with the Grateful Dead a lot. His acid was part of the culture, really. And he made the band sound really good with him around.
