@@harryberry474 the human spirit is just that, a spirit. This is not the first time the spirit of consciousness has lighted the way toward self awareness, nor will there ever be a last. Glad you said this, cause I was just about to. I know that In the earliest days of televised rock, a lot of your life tv producers were a product of the Old School like Ed Sullivan, Hollywood Palace, Smothers Brothers...(What are they talking about, Grandpa???) and it was all pre programmed, rehearsed, and shot from the waist up, camera in a tight shot on the lead singers face. Multi Instrumental groups like Steely Dan, Chicago, Doobie Brothers, The Eagles they didn't know how to shoot them because the focus was more on the music. Ask much as I liked the Midnight special, it's why I always thought Don Kirshner's Rock Concert was a better show. Their camera crew how to shoot a rock band for a new younger demographic of TV audience.

I was 12 when this came out. Even though I had been playing an acoustic, Had just started playing electric guitar that summer. When I heard this solo, I almost gave up..LOL, but 5 years later could jam along with this album. These guys were considered to be better than everyone else, as far as American bands go. I really liked The Eagles back then, but they weren't really anything like Steely Dan. Those were the days.....

No internet, just terrestrial radios, vinyl albums and occasional concerts. Everyone grew up with the same thing. That’s why it’s still ingrained those of a certain age. The following generations can’t ever have that kind of camaraderie. When you hear the songs it’s like going back in a time tunnel.

The sound on this is from the record so they may just be doing that for the look of it, to me the record sounds like it's mostly Fagan overdubbed.

No, it's just that the synch is off. This was from their appearance on "The Midnight Special" TV show back in the early 70s (I can't remember the actual year, but it's easy enough to find. One of the things that was unique about TMS was that they did not allow prerecorded backing tracks. ALL music was played 100% LIVE. NOTHING was played to a "track".

@@kb6kgx Nope, it's lip-synched without a doubt. You can claim "it had to be live" all you want (a very dubious claim to make about TV music broadcasts in the '70s - look around on KZbin and you'll find numerous people explaining why this is so), but that does nothing to explain how they accomplished the impossible in flawlessly duplicating the sound of the album. Others have already pointed out that the guitars are not even plugged in, so skip that part and consider the drums. Not only is the drum-playing note-for-note identical as the playing on the album (this is virtually impossible to accomplish, and any drummer who's familiar with the album will notice this right away), but the sound of the drums and even the cymbals is exactly the same as on the album. That never happens in real life, and how could they accomplish such a sound-engineering miracle without even using any microphones? They set up microphones for the singers because they knew that's what the viewing audience would notice, but the dozen or more microphones that would have been needed for the drums (along with the big, bulky microphone stands which would be reaching in from all directions) are conspicuously absent.

Great music. It’s the only good thing I had. Unlike you, in totality, the worst decade of my life. Don’t mean to sound morose, but if it wasn’t for Jesus, I’d be writing you this from the grave or jail. As Jim Morrison wrote, “ Music was my only friend.” Always enjoyed listening to Steely Dan. Still do. Stay well and God bless😊✝️😊

Clearly, this is the studio recording of the song with video from some other source, perhaps a rehearsal for a TV show. Why people are getting upset about it is beyond my comprehension.

A great early lineup!...Singer David Palmer in front, Donald Fagen on keyboards, situated in the back stage because of his early, well documented issues with stage fright...Denny Dias and Jeff (Skunk) Baxter on guitar.,..Walter Becker on bass...The late, great, Jim Hodder on drums...
