Steely Dan is definitely an Album Band, with albums representing 'generations' of influences, of different member-musicians and different session musicians. They will have some 'radio hits' but fans recognize albums as a whole product. Casual listeners that invest a few more minutes usually find far more treasures than a radio's playlist.

The 2 guys pictured, Walter Becker ( Bass) and Donald Fagan ( Keys, Lead vocals) were the songwriters for the band..and you're right...they could crank out some excellent lyrics..extraordinary creativity. ..so good that even after a 22 year hiatus, they comeback with the " Two against Nature" LP and win another Grammy. Besides " Aja" , " Countdown to Ecstacy" is my 2nd favorite from them.

This one interpretation of "Gold Teeth". " It's about high-stakes casino gambling. The "killing floor" is the gaming tables. Gold teeth are dice. The woman he's singing about is a gambler, gold-digger, maybe prostitute, and tries to seduce rich guys in the casino".

I love Steely Dan. They were a unique genre unto themselves. You must hear “Kid Charlemagne” and “Don’t Take Me Alive” to hear three of the best guitar solos in rock-they’re actually legendary, very tasteful but requiring some jazz guitar chops. Becker and Fagen didn’t play when it came to musicians-the most iconic drummers have played for them, such as Bernard Purdy of Purdy Shuffle fame. Don’t sleep on Fagen’s solo work-“Nightfly” is almost a concept album in its cohesiveness. Some of his solo songs have accompanying videos-a really good one is the Michael Gondry video for “Snowbound”. I don’t know it for a fact, but it could be based on the German silent film “Metropolis”, there are similarities in the worlds depicted. Some of their music isn’t as viscerally, overtly emotional as the majority of rock, you have to listen with your head (and your ears of course) rather than your heart. The emotion is there, it’s just that it’s the wry emotion of life’s resigned losers ( the characters of many-not all-of their songs-not Fagen and Becker themselves lol). They could hardly help it lol, they were two Jewish intellectuals-or at least Fagen was certainly, there was speculation about Becker. But he fit the stereotype very well:)

I was born 1960, so I grew up with steely dan, fantastic music. My friends couldn't understand my music taste. It was way too "intellectual" for my simple minded buddies. But I loved it instantly. If you like that kind of music, you should try "crusaders", great music too. A little bit jazzy too, but not that complex. Just start with "street life"! You will like it, I promise you!

Not your typical rock band, and yes, jazz influenced. I thought this song was about a witch. A voodoo woman who rolls her gold teeth to read the future. Thanks A&D ☮💚🎶

Steely Dan can, at times, be somewhat cryptic in their lyrics. You don't always "get" the meaning of their songs at first listen. This particular track could easily have been a full on instrumental. I love Donald's voice but the instrumentation in this song is outstanding. Take care....

This is a challenging song and it took me a while to enjoy it. There is a Your Gold Teeth II that is VERY enjoyable on the first listen. Mucho recommendo!

Well done for reacting to a Steely Dan deep cut; you may not get many thousands of views for this one... Also well done to the guy suggesting it. ..They only do really good songs, but this may not be as immediate as most. It's brilliant of course and one of their jazziest early songs. I've always equated gold teeth with dice; gamble, throw them out and see what happens (how they roll). I don't know if Cathy (the opera singer) Berberian would agree. I've already enjoyed your previous two reaction videos and urge you to do more. You should be already realising how stellar the engineering and production is on this 50 year old music; the pains taken, the effort involved, how clearly separated the instruments are. I'm not a production nut, but it's thrilling. Couple of gold teeth I'm throwing out: Time Our Of Mind The Caves Of Altamira Feel free to ignore my suggestions. - Stick all the tracks on a dartboard and put on a blindfold; I defy you to find one you don't like.... The Extraordinary Men Of The Groove don't miss and neither will you.

'The Dan' have no bad tracks! They're all diamonds! ,this Lp in particular takes me straight back to my mid 70s teenage acid youth!! Love you reactions guys! Just to let you know that the bands name 'Steely Dan ' comes from an 'Edgar Rice Boroughs' novel, it was a steam driven Dildo !! A bit of information for you!!...

Great reaction as usual. There are no bad Steely Dan songs, however, I believe their absolute masterpiece is the song Aja off the album with the same name. Everything on that album was perfect (Peg, Josie, Deacon Blues, etc.). You may also enjoy their song Kid Charlamange (read a little it about it first and it makes perfect sense). Thanks!

Lyrics can paint pictures and I'm just reading Raymond Chandler who had all the vivid visual descriptions down pat and steely Dan are able to take you on a journey. Myself I think of the Russian guy in the hotel I stayed at in Cuba. His entire mouth was full of gold and I thought he should avoid smiling so much given the price of gold.
