I was on an excursion run of the Standard Railcar RM31 when it nearly hit a ute whose driver had failed the steely stare. Horn blared for like 10 seconds, saw a ute backing up and we stopped on the other side of the crossing. The crew said it was a suicidal motorist, reset the brake and we carried on since thankfully no collision had occurred. I didn't see the truck on the tracks, but given the ute was reversing when I saw it the impression I got was that he came rocking up to the stop sign showing no intention of stopping or even looking, heard the horn blaring at him, braked, ended up stopping actually on the track and had to quickly reverse off it. Now had that been a freight train it likely would have taken significantly longer to slow and would probably have reached the crossing before the ute could reverse off it, so hopefully the ute's driver will be more careful using railway crossings in the future.

For me it’s the other way. in the locomotive I stare both ways wondering what knob is gonna make my day longer dealing with the aftermath.
