After watching so many renditions of this song, I'm truly convinced that there is something missing in the vocalist that aren't black. If you have seen Jennifer Hudson and Alex Newell's renditions, they sing from such emotion and with presence because the song has a historic and cultural meaning. Until you've descended or experienced what this song means to represent, you can't deliver that same emotionally evoked performances as the two artists mentioned above imo.

I believe that, though this song is representing oppression of the black community, anyone can encapsulate that emotion which is being represented -- emphasising the history, without having to experience it first-hand.

in real vocal competition they put the judges behind a screen and you walk into a room without seeing anyone. You have the music you have to sing - and they start the background track and you sing. They never see you at all. This is different and I understand that. Just wanted to share my experiences. I did great.
