Nathalie never won even a single set against Steffi.

A lot of net rushers could trouble Steffi. Nathalie was not one of them however.

Poor Nathalie always facing a wall 🧱 Steffi and Monica's seles were deffo warriors

@@gk891 Interesting to speculate about why. One the one hand, Nathalie didn't peak until her late 20s so maybe if Steffi had played longer than Nathalie might at least have got a set. In their 1998 Birmingham match, Nathalie was 3-0 before the matched was cancelled due to rain, but Steffi was on the road back from injury there. I think though that Natalie's game didn't match up well against Steffi for a few reasons. She was a flat hitter, which is just what Steffi liked, her forehand wasn't a weapon and she wasn't the greatest mover.

@@zeddeka I thought Tauziat moved very well when it came to moving forward into the net. But her movement side to side wasn't the greatest. But yes, her flat hitting probably played right into Steffi's hands.

Personally, I believe Steffi has the best bh slice of all time. She really carves into, weight on the right foot, and takes it early. Beautiful.

She was very dependent on that slice backhand to put her opponents off balance. It set up her forehand. She could run into trouble however when she faced opponents who were not bothered by her severe slice backhand. An example might include Coetzer during Amanda's peak year (1997) because she was so small in stature. Another example might include Sabatini as Gaby was so strong that she could dig up those low slices so amazingly well. I might also mention Lori McNeil as Lori also had an amazing one-handed slice backhand of her own.

@ She played with a continental grip, she could have easily rolled over the ball on her bh side. I’m curious as to why she always sliced.

@@jasonfarr9252 Her slice backhand was unbelievably effective. The way it skidded across the court and put players off balance was amazing. At the 1995 U.S Open finals against Seles, Graf hit some topspin backhands but it didn't always work. In the commentary booth, Martina Navratilova said that Graf needed to be careful with that topspin backhand because it bounced much higher than her slice did which allowed Seles to tee-off on it. And that she should stick to her slice because it stayed much lower through the court.
