Without question. Biggest mistake IU made was firing him. We haven't been relevant since well except for 2002 and that team had Coach Knight players. but lost that final. If Cody & Victor didn't leave in 2013 no telling what 2014 could have been.

As great as Knight was, I'm not sure anyone can surpass Krzyzewski. Hard to beat a .766 career winning percentage and 5 championships. These two guys are probably the top 2 or 3 best to ever coach the game. I think Knight's greatest accomplishment will be winning so many games with relatively nameless players.

Bob knight couldn't coach today because he promotes discipline, hard work and actually believes a kid should go to class! The trophy generation of today are spoiled, entitled brats who don't believe in hard work! Sorry to say it.

Coleman didn't shoot two, he simply missed the front end of a 1-and-1 (and missed it badly). And on replay, Daryl Thomas really didn't make any room for himself with the pump fake - Coleman didn't budge. Knight is right that Thomas was smart not to challenge Coleman, who was above the rim all game (19 rebounds) and would have swatted any post move. What was clever by Thomas is that he dribbled away from the baseline, handed the ball to Smart and then screened Coleman so that he couldn't contest The Shot. That was key.

And I know Alford was the first option, but during the last 4--5 minutes of that game, Keith Smart was hitting everything he put up. He was in the zone on both offensive and defensive ends. The right guy shot it at the right time.

And they weren't attracting the recruits Knight was accustomed to getting either! The balance of college basketball as a whole was increasing, which didn't help! Unlike today, recruits weren't always going to the high profile universities! Once Damon Bailey and Alan Henderson had moved on following the '94 Sweet 16, Knight only got one overall Top 20 national recruit (Luke Recker) over his final six seasons! And of course, Recker ended up transferring

@@bradlewis6514 the problem was mostly that Knight had stopped applying himself to recruiting. He was letting his assistants handle a big part of it. He had begun to work at it a little harder right before he was fired. The team that made the championship game in 02 was comprised largely of Knight recruits. Jefferies and Fife were both very highly regarded recruits. Moye was as well.

@@MikeJones-fv1fe Fife was tough as nails and Jeffries grew into a heck of a college player! He may not have been five-star, but the makeup of that '02 team was their tenacity and playing with a chip on their shoulder because everyone overlooked them! They told the doubters where they could stick it! But it is true, it's the same conglomerate of schools that get most of the top recruits and it did start to affect IU as the '90s closed, along with schools that had begun to grow as consistent programs, like UConn

Indiana's championship was the game before on Saturday vs UNLV w/ Armon Gilliam, Freddie Banks, etc. IU had to run n gun w/ them for 40 minutes and barely squeaked by in a very high scoring game which was not the Hoosiers style. IU didn't get their legs back until the 2nd half vs Cuse according to Knight and others.

All sorts of misinformation here. Coleman missed the front end of a one and one. He did not miss two FTs and he was not an awful foul shooter at 69%. Seikaly was a 60% FT shooter. And IU was favored in this game by 3. They were not the underdog.

I dont think Syracuse was favored in this game.....I think the guy meant that UNLV was favored over IU in the national semifinals- which UNLV was by I believe 3 to 4.5 points. But once IU beat the rebels, even though SYR had a big 14 point win over cinderella Providence in the first national semifinal, IU was rightfully favored in this one. Alot of people said that national semi between unlv and indiana was the true national championship, but I disagree. This syracuse team was the real deal and it wouldnt have shocked me at all to see them beat UNLV had that matchup happened. Though that rebel team was loaded - had it all- inside game with giliam, outside with banks and paddio, and of course great defense as always with a shark coached team. Just couldnt stop IU enough and lost a classic, 93-97. But had UNLV played IU say 10 times, the rebs likely would have won 6-7 times. Thats the way march madness goes.

And it was nearly the same scenario for the 'Cuse in '96! The semifinal between Syracuse and Mississippi St was billed as the underlier to the heavyweight semifinal between Kentucky and UMass, who'd been ranked #1 between the two of them all season! But John Wallace had been superb that year as a breakout star and he was even moreso in the tournament, and his teammates at the right time all fed off him with their own performance! Despite Kentucky being the prohibitive favorite, I felt that with the way Wallace had been playing Syracuse could give Kentucky a game and they did into the last five minutes! Wasn't as closely contested possession wise like the '87 final but Syracuse '96 got within two points late before Kentucky hit a couple crucial momentum baskets in a row!

And your right Rawn I believe about Vegas-Indiana! And Indiana had the advantage of having nearly a week to prepare for that game (not just the one day in between tournament games for each two game bracket), then went out and surprised me by beating Vegas at their own game! That Indiana team putting up 97 points against a full court team was a story in itself! Giving Bob Knight nearly a week to prepare won Indiana that game! Vegas may have won it had they played Indiana in the final! Would have been harder for Indiana to prepare for that running 94 feet with one just one day's break

But like Houston '83, Seton Hall '89 in the overtime, Kansas '03 and Memphis '08, '87 Syracuse really did themselves in at the free throw line! It always ends up most crucial during the NCAA tournament and for the above teams, proved costly down their respective stretch runs! It's a must to make your charity shots! Syracuse missed 3 of their last 4 FT's and lost by a point! And they'd missed several before that! If people other than u and myself don't believe it, they should ask those teams how important free throws end up being

Yep, people seem to forget Indiana was a 1 seed and pretty much ranked in the top 5 all year, and had a two time first team All American and the best pure shooter in the nation that year in Alford. In the first year of the 3 at the college level, Alford made 107 3s that year at a 53% clip, including 7-10 from deep in that final against Syracuse, and left Indiana as their all time leading scorer. I believe he is still second all time at IU, behind only Calbert Cheaney.

Coach Wooden wasn't bully. Coach K, Knight's underling, isn't a bully. I can name countless super successful coaches who don't cheat in all sports who weren't bullies. Your NEVER LAY YOUR HANDS ON A PLAYER EVER. Inexcusable. The inability to control ones temper reflects a LACK of discipline. Knight is and always will be a hypocrite. There are plenty of coaches like Tom Izzo that are hard on players but know where the line is. There is no excuse for choking a player. EVER. He represents the worst of our society. A toxic masculine leader who feels the only way to get people to succeed is to be physically violent with them and emotionally abusive with them. It is 100% my belief that 60%+ of all the players would have left his program if he wasn't so powerful that he could destroy their ability to get a decent job out of his own selfishness. The son of a bitch was so powerful he could keep kids from getting jobs if he felt they had wronged him. That is just flat out wrong. Selfish. You never lay your hands on a person, ever. I don't care if the student calls you a fucking asshole. There is never any excuse for violence unless someone acts violently towards you and you must protect yourself.

You're ridiculous. Bob knight is amazing, hes kind of a drill sargeant... Thats not a bad thing. Alot of us men aren't pussies, I'm ok with getting yelled at in competition, that's how you become great. I'm going up against and getting beaten by a 7 ft 350 lb Shaquille O'neal, I couldnt care less if an old man throws something at me... He does it to toughen you up, you know, bcuz you have to be a man to play pro ball

He was old school and in a past time, namely the 60's and 70's, it was ok to put hands on a player and probably expected. He was a little too physical and confrontational in my opinion, but the players who played for him knew that and signed up for it. You can't argue that his methods worked during that time period. Eventually he became extinct like the dinosaurs because he didn't adapt to a gentler/kinder type of coaching. And as far as cheating, most every D1 program in basketball and football is "cheating" in some way. Basically you aren't trying if you aren't cheating or looking for ways around the rules. Think about this- if a program is cheating, then they are doing their best to keep it concealed. The cases that the NCAA investigates and can actually prove infractions is quite small. For every violation they uncover, there is dozens more they don't find and/or can't prove to a degree that would be punishable.

I mean if man did not cheat and was truthful in all his activities he would pop back out of the body he is stuck in and we can't have that. No, we can't have that! not sure what hes talking about.. cause when thomas gets the ball, seikley was no where near him., coleman had him stopped by himself.... and alford was actually wide open..his man left him completely.. smart had to take a tough shot! also..smart was nowhere near the ball on the inbound, let alone almost swiped it.. and when he fouled coleman he did not spin him around!
