Steinway pianos were (are?) the vertical pianos of choice in the U.S. Navy. They could take a lot of beating, and they did. In the Navy School of Music, there were Steinway console pianos for dance band playing, all over the place back in 1963, when I was there (at that time in the Anacostia part of Washington, D:C:). Some of those Steinway consoles were borderline junk by then, pounded unmercifully for so many years. Most, though, were in quite good playing shape. The practice rooms had various kinds of Steinways in them. Steinway was the Navy's pianos, period.

Spot on review and presentation. Coincidentally- I own and play 1968 1098 that I purchased around 2005. Love it dearly. Some Steinway piano technicians have mentioned that the 1098 and K52 are a bitch to tune and take a bit more time. But when tuned, regulated, and voiced correctly they’re well worth every dollar.

Hey-I noticed when you played the upright piano you did not open the front panel-I just discovered that on my Steinway upright I could open the front panel and lay the music support almost flat. And the sound was so much better-I guess kind of like opening up a grand piano. I found the music was more tinny/plucky with the panel closed, and I noticed that sound when you played it. Can you make a video to talk about playing with that panel open and closed? Love your videos!!

I was about to write this comment! I own a 1964 Steinway 1098 and the swing-out front panel is one of my favorite features.

Took me many years to like mine. Unlike larger Steinways, even if it’s prepped, pressing a single note doesn’t sound especially good. But if you listen to a K52 it helps understand what the intention is. It’s guts and glory and you have to know how to play piano to make it sound good. But most of the unisons should be in tune, and hammers should be reasonably shaped.

The answer for me would be no, at least not this particular piano. This is great for me, though, I always thought Steinway was the pinnacle. I'll probably stick with a Kawai. I like the 400 at the moment. It'll be my first acoustic. :D Lovely playing

I never played a 1098. But so far, the best 45'' that I played is the K-200 by far.

Believe it or not, I like the Boston uprights more than the Steinway uprights. Both are well made, but the Steinway uprights never got me excited. I practiced for many hours on the Bostons during school and while the build quality was not as good, they were just a pleasure to play. I taught a bunch of lessons on those Bostons as well

It’s true. Steinway uprights really just don’t sound good. I’ve tried dozens over the years. Always disappointed. Boston uprights sounded decent but the best sounding ones IMO are the 118s (which are manufactured in Indonesia, incidentally). The Boston grands are decent but have a poor, twangy tone in the mid-bass/low tenor

One of the churches that I've played at frequently has a 40-some year old 1098. It's...okay. Definitely not my favorite piano to play.

1098 no longer made (2022). Only vertical Steinway makes is the K2, I think. This one is rough. No thanks.
