I don’t know why I am just now in 2024 finding the stellar Ruby magnolia, but it looks like a great privacy hedge plant. I’m working toward a mixed hedge and am looking forward to adding stellar Ruby to the 4 carolina sapphire cypress and 3 Nellie Stevens Hollie’s I planted last year. I’ve ordered 3 stellar rubies but after seeing this video I may order a couple more.

I just purchased this plant online and received a 2 gallon plant with 6 stems coming out of the soil. I see that the ones in the video are single stem. Should I try to separate the stems or leave them together? I’m worried they will be too crowded. I live in zone 8a Texas. Thanks!

I just received a 2 gallon that had 5 stems. The plants were about 13" tall. The company planted several cuttings in a pot so that they could produce a full salable pot faster. I am keeping mine as a potted plant. If you want to grow it into a tree, you will have to select one of the stems and cut out or sacrifice the other stems. If you try to pull apart each of the cuttings, they will most likely die from shock. The only way that you could possibly prevent this would be if you had a misting system. It is supposedly being sold as a tree form and it is disappointing that the nurseries are selling them like this. I am a retired nurseryman.

@@tycchock1 Did you purchase yours by Southern Living Plant? I'm considering buying one, but am concerned that I'll receive one with stems.

@@yuyanzimmerman6370 I recently purchased one from my local nursery that looks like its two multi-stemmed plants in one container. I'm guessing two or more cuttings were propogated together from the beginning because both are very vigorous. I plan to try and separate them this winter and try to tree form one. I'm not sure who originally grew them, but they're not Southern Living plants.

@@tycchock1 Thank you for sharing this information. These types of tactics are why I hate purchasing plants online. I bought mine from Sputhern Living via home depot and, while they were only the 2 gallon, they have one very solid stem in each.

Well, I thought this plant was patented by Mr. McCracken and we can propagate for our self but we can't sell it, don't we?
