"wars to own" would mean that someone would create or take part in a war to obtain something.

True. However, 'wars' may also be considered as a verb. Thus 'wars to own' would mean 'struggles to possess', an unfortunate trait that characterises our miserable earthly lives. Unending, never satisfied struggles to possess things, including obvious ones like money and the stuff it buys, glory and fame, position etc.There are also more subtle things in our day to day living such as the jostling for advantage over others, the desire for the admiration of others etc. All these things are truly worthless, and we would be better off if we realise that our lives do not consist in the abundance of any of them!

Keep in mind the lyrics are poetic and not necessarily spoken in straightforward language. "Wars to own" can mean any hate, division, diminishing others, or not acting in the spirit of Christ's love. We can all be vulnerable to waging these kinds of wars in our hearts.
