STEM: How to make a Truss Bridge

In this video I explain and demonstrate how to build a Truss bridge. I used straws to build a Truss bridge but you can other materials. The Truss is easy to design and build in small groups. If you are a teacher using this video you can add constraints to make the Stem challenge harder. When testing the Truss bridge use 200-300 pennies in a cup and place the bridge between a 10 inch span.
Materials:
20-Non bendable straws
12 inches of tape
Scissors

Truss bridges are my favourite type of bridge! I've lead a couple different bridge challenges. One, which I loved, is that after we looked at different kinds of bridges, students would receive a box of popsicle sticks, 1 large white glue and then let them create. We would put weightlifting weights on the bridges. It was crazy! A few groups constructed bridges that could support over 200-400 pounds. Love your challenge! Blessings on your weekend, dear friend!

I appreciate the easy-to-use materials I just found a free online pdf study guide on bridges in our states and found The Goethals Bridge which after I did some research discovered is a steel cantilever through truss bridge that builds on the technology of simpler bridges. The Illinois Institute of Technology hosts the International Bridge Building Contest every year (except this year) where students can build a bridge out of basswood to the specs for that year. It is a great contest that may have a qualifying contest in your local region. I used to help with our local contest, and it is amazing what students can do if given the opportunity.
