STEN Suppressed Sub Machine Gun

The Sten machine carbine was one of the most hastily completed and most expediently made submachine gun of the Second World War. Although it was reliable, a number of users didn't like it simply because they saw it as a cheap pipe gun created as a last ditch effort. Nonetheless, there were a number of suppressed versions of it, two of the most prominent featured here, the Mk. II(S) and the Mk.VI with the wooden stock and furniture. Initially, the first suppressed version created for SOE was a Mk. II with a suppressor that was 22 inches in length, horribly heavy and unwieldy for the operations that the British clandestine service found themselves in most of the time.
Although the suppressors shown here are integral, due to the construction of the Sten, they could easily be dismantled with the barrel itself. This was an inherent feature with the Mk. IIs, and the Mk.Vs. One of the problems with the suppressed versions was that they could overheat. Thus on many versions, a canvas guard was added to the suppressor to keep a shooter's hands from burning. In addition, the bolts had to be lightened because they couldn't cycle reliably with the additional pressure from the suppressor.

I knew a guy who built a Sten gun from a parts kit using a piece of exhaust tubing to make the receiver. The first time out shooting it he learned two things: 1) It needed hotter rounds than he used to fully cycle the bolt, This means it didn't go far enough back for the trigger to "catch" it and stop it from shooting until empty! 2) always test fire an automatic with no more than 2 rounds in the magazine NOT a full mag!

Either the bolt was too light or the spring too weak.
@shootinbruin3614
@shootinbruin3614 3 жыл бұрын
@@simonmorris4226 That's the exact opposite of what's causing the problem. A weaker spring or lighter bolt (within reason) would help the gun achieve full cycle distance with the given load.

STENs are cool weapons. The stock removes with a simple depression of a "button" protruding from the receiver, the barre/shroud unscrews, and the magazine housing rotates to cover the ejection port. The resultant pieces can fit inside a shoebox.

The cost of a Thompson was $225 at the beginning of the war and dropped to $45 by the end of the war.. A grease gun was $22 and dropped to $15. A sten was £10 so that's why the British used it. M1 carbine was $45. The British stopped buying Thompson after dunkirk because they could have many stens for 1 Thompson.

Watch hickok45 video on the 'Sten' and see how this "atrocity" was responsible for putting more nazis in the ground than any other 9mm sub-machine gun of WWII. Necessity is the mother of invention and when Great Britain stood alone for the first 2 years 'pretty' firearms counted for nothing.

Nice job Miles, we need to see your face in that furry hat again ha ha. But, All ur Vids are interesting. The Sten looks like it was welded together by a blind man, but still somehow operated lol. They must've had a lot of baffle strikes with those things. I mean how close can the tolerances be on a multi mass produced suppressor like that, and used in combat conditions?
