I'm in the republic of Ireland. I've done the Belfast to cairnryan with my dog(£15 fee) as a foot passenger. On paper you can't bring a dog into Northern Ireland without the checks, however the Dublin to Belfast train ALL the staff say it's not needed. (I would imagine larger breeds may need their own seat booked next to yours). So when I was in Northern Ireland Stena line just requested a UK address (with post codes that can be found easily on g maps). So off I went as a foot passenger (dog booked into the kennels-not all ferry models have pet friendly rooms, so ask in advance). The return trip from Liverpool to Belfast, just as easy. Didn't spend a penny on the EU passport. The website says if returning to northern Ireland then one condition is you don't bring the pet south but as mentioned before there are no checks. Even driving, there is no physical boarder checks. Just normal roads. My dog has been to Germany and America and back which was incredibly stressful (often getting outdated or simply wrong advice from vets abroad,costing £1000+ for each dog, America) - like one vet telling me , an Irish man, Ireland is in England and I'm wrong. So I congratulate the UK in making life easier for their pet owners. There hasn't been a case of rabies in our lands in over a hundred years. The beloved pets don't need injections. Have a UK to UK address for Stena line you'll coast on through. You can also travel the islands without bother. But keep in mind foreign vets can abuse the fact you need to get your pet home on schedule so they will charge whatever they like. Also there are PO boxes you can rent for about £5 per package if you need to order anything online. Ireland doesn't have Amazon collection points. OOHPod is a popular one here. Good luck everyone.

@@carolinemchale yes it's required from UK to EU (Ireland, Republic). If you travel from Liverpool or Scotland (UK) to Belfast (UK). There is zero checks. Only requirement is UK address and microchip. They only check address when booking, can add any. Billing is done by sms ferry text not when calling. Don't mention you plan on going South. When in Belfast you can travel by a short train South. Zero checks. No border. You can ring the train and ask. Silly rules huh. It's known as the common travel area. UK to UK technically. Domestic travel has less rules. Remember both countries hasn't see a case of rabies in a hundred years. The dogs don't need those injections.

Walked my dog on, allowed but staff seemed somewhat clueless which was inconvenient so I informed them of the rules and my booking (they said dogs in crates only but he was booked for the kennels not a room).

Ah thank you for sharing your vlog albeit several years old, I just did a similar thing and got a passport in NI, they transferred our rabies over however I've had a few people saying to me transferring the rabies makes it invalid. 😅 I've checked our passport and the address is in Belfast for the rabies. Thanks Kathleen, it’s 2 years since we went. No checks into Belfast or out of Dublin or when crossing from NI to Eire. We went on an AHC as that was what the vet required in order to issue our EU pet passports. We were more than happy to do so. We’ve saved over £500 in repeat AHCs so far and will save another £300 this year 👍🏻

Regarding Rabies, my vet is extremely concerned about the number of dogs being smuggled in to UK from Eastern Europe in particular, where there has been faking of Rabies paperwork. A woman I knew had two ''Prague ratters'' that were 9 weeks old, delivered from Eastern Europe. These can't possibly have had rabies jabs, as far too young. Extremely concerning. No one wants that appalling disease here, but vets think it will eventually come in, due to smuggling.

Hi Christian, the NI EU passports will last as long as the NI protocol remains in place. You just need to make sure your rabies boosters are done in the EU. If a UK vet writes in the passport it will invalidate it. Cairnryan to Belfast was £188 one way 👍🏻

Hi Mark, no problems at all since we got the passports. We used them 3 months later to travel to Rotterdam, even though the NI vet transferred the UK administered rabies vaccine from the AHC to the PP. Lots of people on FB said we would have problems but we didn’t! We’ve since had Jessie’s rabies booster done in the EU. We don’t need an AHC anymore as we have PP issued from EU 👍🏻

Thanks Elaine! That’s a tricky question. In our experience, yes. Our UK jabs were transferred from our AHC to our EU passport and we used the passports in September to sail to Rotterdam with no problems. However, people widely report they have had problems and had to have another AHC to go to the EU and then have another rabies jab before the passport was valid.

Hi Kate, although documents are required, the checks are suspended. We travelled on an AHC and it wasn’t checked on the outbound leg - Cairnryan to Belfast, or on the return Dublin to Holyhead. Humans weren’t checked either! The vet we used required us to travel with an AHC, but if you don’t need it for that, our experience is no checks we’re done at all.

Re passports. We paid over £200 for our 2 springers at a local vets in North Yorkshire pre Brexit. We were due to go to Ireland in 2020, but we all know what happened then. Hi Tom, we had Uk EU passports prior to Brexit with up to date rabies jabs in. They do look the same, but because the rabies jab was done by a UK vet, they are now worthless. You need to get an EU passport issued by a vet in the EU and new rabies jabs done at the time of issue or afterwards. It’s a bit of a minefield!

Hi Lorraine, that’s a tricky question! Currently there are no checks of paperwork going into NI, so you could travel without a rabies vaccination and have it done in NI at the same time as the issuing of the pet passport. However, our NI vet required a valid AHC in order to issue us an EU pet Passport.

That meant we had to have the microchip and rabies jab validated on the AHC by our OV (official veterinarian). We’ve had our NI EU passports for two years now and they’ve saved us a fortune! Hi Cheryl, no particular reason. Nothing was mentioned when we got the passport at the vets, but I think (please don’t quote me as it’s not my area of expertise) that once the protocol is agreed it will take quite a few years to enact. So, even if we only get three years (the validity of rabies jabs) it’s saved us over £400 as opposed to three AHCs. And that’s if we only go abroad once a year (and we like to go twice a year) So potential savings of over £800 😱

Hi Michael, we were the same when we had UK EU passports, but since Brexit the UK EU passports are no longer valid. You have to get an AHC or an EU passport. If you get an EU passport, it will have been issued in an EU country. Only EU vets can administer the rabies boosters and write in an EU passport. If this is done by a UK vet it invalidates the EU passport. Hope that makes sense?

I live in England but have family in Belfast. We visited Belfast a few months ago where a Belfast vet issued us a new passport and gave a rabies booster. (We still had a few months left before a rabies booster was required). We didn’t require a blood test to confirm rabies status as I had evidence of previous rabies vaccine and blood test response in the old uk passport. Hopefully all we’ll need before future European travel is proof of tapeworm treatment. In future I’ll have the rabies boosters overseas again to maintain validity of the new pet passport.

Did that crossing a few weeks ago not the best off road from gretnabridge went to Titanic museum in Belfast kids loved it well worth a visit as for leaving the EU people have not realised the issues have a good time🛳️🚢
