I love to see how you use these pencils! I really wish that Mars violet was in the 12 set, because IMO there are way too many reds in the 24 set. I agree with you that I much prefer a limited palette. But I do struggle with the lack of value/contrast in these pencils, and how muted they are. I mean, the muted colors are very pretty! But I struggle to work with them. You definitely need to adapt yourself to these pencils - which you do beautifully here!

Ok I actually think you would love the course I am currently building- it’s in beta testing and will be available soon. It focuses on how to work with limited palettes, how to see color and value, etc. and lots of the things you just mentioned :) if you are interested in getting some info when it’s available you can sign up here: lana-gloschat.mykajabi.com/get-notified

They are great as an addition to a set with just a few, but also really great as a set. The set I linked is about $60 and if that feels reasonable I would totally recommend the 24 set. I love using them as a limited palette. Also planning to do some more videos with these. Maybe landscape studies. What do you think?

This was THE BEST video on portrait sketches I have seen! Can't wait to try it on the weekend, my sketches usually end up with not so well defined shadow (granted, my refences are not so contrasting as well). Thank you!!! Oh, and I have the pencils, they are absolutely fantastic! I only miss one pinkish colour for white ski portraits, but I borrow from other sets.

I use them with the lightfast pencils as an underpainting when drawing animals on pastelmat, speeds up the process by filling in the tooth a bit, plus quite a few of the colours are the same or similar in both. The chocolate is very useful, like you I prefer not to use black straight off, and the white is nice and opaque too (if a little chunky for the very finest detail!)
@LanaGloschatArt
@LanaGloschatArt 9 ай бұрын
Ok I love that idea. Might have to try it! When I combine these brands it’s usually just with adding the white Derwent drawing to the lightfast set for more opaque whites.

Derwent do make very good pencils but I find I can't take the company seriously. Here is why: the Drawing pencils have been around for a few years but has kept the range to a small number. The number was increased from 18 to 24 in the 1990s. These are Lightfast which is their biggest selling point for those who want to sell their work. But - The much larger Lightfast range only came out in 2018. Having named the series Lightfast, Derwent must have finally cottoned on to the advantage Lightfast pencils have. That puts them more than a century behind both Faber Castell and Carran d Ache, whose pencils have now stood the test of time. Derwent need to work harder in persuading local sellers to carry open stock as that is a major disadvantage that put them again behind Faber Castell in particular. Those facts are likely to have a major influence on why the pencils are underrated.

I actually absolutely love Derwent but I do think they were marketing to a different type of artists with different concerns several years back. I think lightfastness is really only something to consider if you are making work to sell or hang… lots of great pencils that aren’t lightfast are wonderful for sketchbook stuff or making art for fun. The lightfasts were a little late to the game but I am glad they made it :) thanks for sharing their thoughts, I definitely learned a few things 👍

@@LanaGloschatArt I pretty much agree with you. To go for lightfastness can be a waste of money if all that is wanted are folder or book drawings. Faber Castell came out with the Polochromos around 1905. Caran d Ache came out with the Luminence in 1915. So lightfastness has long been an issue. In spite of requests to increase the Drawing range further, Derwent resisted. They must have known lightfastness was an issue with professionals, so can't have been aiming at that market. I was happy to use their Student and Artist pencils for quite a long time. It's only the internet that has tought me Derwent aren't quite as good as I thought. They are behind Faber Castell again with the Matt range of graphites that go to a superb 14B. But what Derwent do they do well, its just a pity they appear to rest behind the leaders. Had I have lived in Dartmouth I think i would have been happy to remain with Derwent as they carry open stock there.

These are my favourite Derwent pencils. Some years ago I did some work for Derwent and asked them back then if they would increase the range as they were perfect for the wildlife art I was doing. But they said they had no plans on increasing the range. It was disappointing but led in the end to me changing over from using exclusively Derwent pencils in my art to now using predominantly Faber castell and CaranDAche. I rarely use Derwent these days, I now consider Faber Castell and Caran d’Ache superior. I think Derwent missed an opportunity when they gave up on the Drawing range.

Darn. I wonder what the reasoning is for not expanding this line. The color softs are a similar consistancy but not lightfast... it makes me wonder if the derwent drawing pencils are the pigments that they were most easily able to make lightfast in that line?

Thanks for very useful video. I' ve had these pencils for several years and didn't really know what to do with them. Recently got brave and used them for 2 tree portraits on vellum, worked so great! i also mix them with my Derwent Lightfast set, very similar feel. They both are lovely pencils with limited color ranges, but work so nicely, not too hard, not too soft.

Hi , thanks for sharing the drawing process! I am a 12 year old artist.... I have a question that i have the 24 set of Derwent drawing pencils but i cannot make many layers with them and the texture of the drawing looks like it is colored over and over again and it looks really waxy , The tooth of paper fills so quickly that i can't add more color to it and color pencil strokes are visible 😔 What should I do, maybe it is because of the paper i use (Canson 1557 /160g) Can you please suggest me that which paper should I use because i am very disappointed with these pancils....... Thank you so much 😊
@LanaGloschatArt
@LanaGloschatArt 7 ай бұрын
Hey! To me it sounds like you might be applying too much pencil in each layer. Try holding your pencil further back and laying down really light layers. I’m not familiar with your paper, it if you are having issues with the tooth filling too fast I would try a hot pressed watercolor paper. Good luck! I have some exercises in my course that would be really helpful. Consider checking out the free lesson and see if you want to join us for beta testing. I would love for you to try out the lessons and let me know how that go for you. courses.lanagloschatart.com/courses/color-lab-beta
