Just stumbled across this video after going through a nostalgic rabbit hole of James Zabeila sets and as soon as I heard his voice I was like “hang on a sec…” I’m 40 now and was being taught to mix by this guy in the early 2000s!! What a legend that he’s still going! Thank you for all you taught me man!!

There is also another way....: This is all very fine, but applies mainly to House, Trance, etc, which were produced with beatmatching in mind. I am mostly playing Classic and Northern Soul as well as vintage Boss Reggae, so no long instrumental intros or outros, nor extended breaks. So I beatmatch New York Style, like Cool Herc did in '73, fading over just the bass (i.e, kickdrum) from track B to track A, while fading out the bass of track A, so you've got the bass track of track B accompanying the mids and highs of track A. Let this run for a moment, and then fade out midst and highs from track A whilst fading in mids and highs from track B. This way you avoid clashing vocals, harmonies, melodies, keys, etc. Full kill on all 3 frequency ranges for both channels is a must for this, but if you can: try it. It's really something else, it's really fun and it really excites the punters!

Honestly….. I taught my self to play vinyl over the past 2 years snd I feel I’m pretty good….. scratch that, I taught my self and saw some of your videos. You’re well versed and give good info in a short amount of time. We appreciate your info bruv. I wish I didn’t have to learn about spl the hard way. To those learning…. If appears from what Iv seen that some people have a natural musical mind. Beat matching vinyl is a little hard at first, making sure you’re in “season” with 8/16/32 counts is even harder. Those whose brain doesn’t subconsciously count beats/melody’s are at a disadvantage. To some people, the cyclic nature of music, the “law” that is that law for how ever long that track is, and the physical manipulation of media just does something to satisfy the neurons when that mix is just right.

Nice video! If you really get into trouble you could always cue the second track to beat three before the verse, then do a big spin back on the currently playing track then immedialely start the second track and flick the cross fader over so it comes in on beat one of the verse.

I've tried to show folk how to mix in my time with turntables. The hardest part is trying to explain music timings. For the majority of dance music its 32 or 64 beats. Theres 2 really important parts to mixing. 1. Make sure you have the same genre of songs, you can drop the occasional "different" tune to give a lift or break up the monotony. However, constantly changing your song genre makes it messy and youll have confused people on your dance floor. 2. Probably following on from above, know your records, know what direction you want to take folk. If you're playing weddings, have a collection of songs for everyone there. If youre playing a house night, make sure its house records and not pan pipe records. There's an art to this, but also you can have shoddy mixing and great tunes.

Good point outs but as an experienced vinyl DJ of old here i don’t do any of that above i just know by ear instantly when to mix in & what works the most vital part is knowing which record is faster then the other ( adjustments & mix recovery ) you can get any mix in time but the trick is to keep it there tight by listening & working up the vibe .

simple thing .. hold the snare on a record , wait for the downbeat and release the record when snare hits . Means less chance of missing your moment . Between turntableism , jungle/dnb and garage / bassline i find it a useful way to mix

I've always thought, how am I gonna hear my headphones over the two huge subs and speakers on a stick... or the club soundsystem? But it's never been a problem. Next month we are gonna set up a pretty big system on the beach. Not 50,000 watts but at least 8 huge speakers are gonna be set up and I believe we are gonna have a blast :^) A friend of mine did 14 years in federal prison but the last year he has been out, and he has been pulling money out his ass and buying lasers, speakers, amps, etc. We are trying to have a successful liftoff in a town that has never had a big scene.

Currently saving up for some used turntables and a mixer. I'll propably use DVS since i won't be able to buy enough records to have a good collection. I've been using a controller for a bit over a year now and i want to move towards turntables since my favourite way to mix is EQ mixing and beatmatching, doing slow transitions and stuff. I feel like turntables would be better for my "Style" of DJing.

I got a killer deal on some used numark tables and a xone mixer for like 500 all together. Then found someone selling 100 classic house records for 100 bucks . Try to find a deal on some vinyl like that. Def worth learning how to mix with just your ears and vinyl, will make everything else so much easier after.
