Yes you can use only hand. I think you have 2 options. Firts, you can run the machine manually using the handwheel. Second, you can press the footpedal using one of your hand while another hand hold/take care the fabric. I hope it works for you. 😊

You can either go to minute 13:00 to choose the pattern, choose the small pattern or to minute 15:00 to choose the tightness. I think you can play with these two facilities to create small stitches.

The needle can break if it's in contact with a very hard fabric, when you have to sew something very thick or when the fabric has many many layers.
