Is it easier to learn to paint a large miniature ?
@ANDREAMINIATURES
@ANDREAMINIATURES 8 жыл бұрын
In a way yes but at the end it requires more knowledge and work. Bigger the scale is more details it will have, for example: if you paint the cloth of a 1/35 figure, it will be just base color, light and shadows. For a 1/16 figure (if the model has quality) you can even simulate with the paint the texture of the cloth and not only the color. The same for the eyes, for a 1/35 figure it's just a point while a 1/16 will have the iris, pupil, etc... I hope my explanation will be enough. Regards,

Very simplified and clear way to paint eyes...very nice..! Another thing; I can't get over from painting with enamels and oils and start painting my figures with the latest trends of acrylic paints....If you ever painted figures with enamels; what would be the biggest difference between both methods that would convince you to use acrylic paints? It seems to me that acrylic paints lack coverage and the repeated layers only build up and hide the already minimum detail; example face of a 1/35th scale figure...I would appreciate any feedback...
@ANDREAMINIATURES
@ANDREAMINIATURES 9 жыл бұрын
+El Diablo Thank you for the comment. Acrylic paint must be always mixed with water in a ratio of 40% paint and 60% water. That way we can apply many layers to the figure and without hiding the details. The fundamental difference between painting with oil and acrylic paint is drying time. Oil colors require much more time to dry than acrylics which allows us to merge the colors on the figure to obtain color transitions and blur. On the other side, acrylics are melted by transparencies. Color transitions on the figure are achieved by overlapping layers of color more or less transparent without completely hiding the tone from under. The enamels also take longer to dry than acrylics (but not as much as oil colors) and therefore, can melt the different tones on the figure. Each type of paint has its advantages and disadvantages. Acrylic colors dry very fast so we see the final results almost immediately after application; but cast technique using transparencies can be a bit more complex to understand for people used to melt the fresh colors on the figure. Another advantage of acrylic is that we can find many matt colors (oils usually are satin) and are perfect to represent, for example, the texture of the clothes. In addition, many of them can be applied both with brush and airbrush (full range Andrea Color is a good example) And if you are interested in learning acrylic techniques we organize painting courses of all types see the following link www.andreaeurope.com/en/next-painting-courses.html

+ANDREAMINIATURES Hello..! (..late on the reply....) I really appreciate this note, and I will look a little more into your link and the possibility of continue trying acrylic paints..( without knowing (or) trying them before ; I bought a whole bunch of Tamiya acrylics, with the intention of painting all my Dragon military sets, but when I tried them, I was totally disappointed; (and I'm pretty handy with the color mixing moves and all..! )but these paints left me feeling a little confused...But time to move on, your explanation makes very much sense..I have to try something else or just plainly go back and enjoy doing it the way I always did it..(sadly all my enamels are dry by now..so, ) Also; I find out that when painting with enamels; for the flat effect on the clothing, you mix your paint with a little lighter fluid, but you have to plan in advance to avoid staining neighboring features in a figure, that require a glossy or satin look....Anyway thank you again..! It was good conversing with you...

+El Diablo Oh gosh... reading your comment! That was me several years back (actually more than that). I'm 40 years old and visited England when I was 10 years old. The man my family and I stayed with was a retired Queens Guard. His knowledge, experiences, what I had access to and learned was something I'll never forget. Anyway, he painted 54mm military figures. Mostly were Queens Guards but he also painted other historical pieces (Civil War, Napoleon Era etc.). At the time I had never seen anything like that (painted figures) with such realism and stunning details. He painted with oils. I was hooked and within seconds had a burning passion for it. When I came back to the states the only figures I could get my hands on were fantasy figures, which were not something I was interested in and most were 22mm. Anyway, my friend from England kindly sent me figures and he would send tips via written letters- it was great experience. He also sent me the much cherished book by Shep Paine. I started using enamels (Humbrol) in the late 90's and began using both mediums 50/50. I never thought twice about the drying time and knew nothing about acrylics. This was therapy for me and I just love putting on my Walkman and listening to The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Chopin etc. (whatever my mood). In the early 2000's I stumble onto a figure painting forum and acrylics were fast becoming the medium to use. I just couldn't make it work... I could fade, the washes were different, basically many of the techniques were different. Fast forward a few years (2009 - 2010 ?) I decided to force myself to make acrylics work. And I'm glad I did. They are my primary use and I just worked through the learning curve... from an artistic standpoint they just feel more "comfortable" if that makes sense. I FEEL as though I've tried every brand, including Tamiya. I'm not a fan at all of their paints, but I use some of their stuff. Like X22 (matte enhancer) which is a life saver. At one point one thing that started frustrating me about acrylics was not getting the consistency. I never had this issue with Winston & Newton or Humbrol. I eventually found that my paint collection pretty much consisted of all Andrea and Vallejo. Both are great... but Andrea's quality and consistency is unmatched by no other. Their painting sets are great... I really wish I had these when I began learning to "layer" acrylics rather than "blending" with oils. Vallejo has an insane amount of colors and it can be daunting at times... I just have my main colors I stick with. However, Andrea's are more streamlined and they have all you need. And I'm honestly not trying to plug Andrea here on their channel. Their paints (and other products) truly are great. I still use oil from time to time and enamel... but mostly just base coat and it's rare. Acrylics lay beautifully over oils. Well, I know you didn't ask for my opinion and I know this is quite long (sorry). Just wanted to offer my experience. I love this art and I love acrylics... would go back for anything. Good luck!
