What do you mean by mode though? Is a mode just different paths a ray can take along a fiber? So if you have various rays (all of the same wavelength) and they’re traveling along different paths then you have multiple modes? Or what if you have rays of different wavelengths does that mean you have various mode? I’m just confused as to is it the path, wavelength, or both that determines if you have various modes.

I guess multimode has greater bandwidth than single mode min. 22:44

No...Single mode has more Bandwidth...For your satisfaction you may search the internet to clear your confusion. Thanks

According to the Numerical aperture formulae, it does not depend on the radius of core. Then why is the NA of Multi mode fiber greater than Single mode fiber? Any other reason that might affect the NA?
@hatimkhan9136 жыл бұрын
i didn't get it step index fiber is it all about thickness i thought in step index fiber index very with redius of core
@EngineeringMadeEasy6 жыл бұрын
No, index varies with radius in case of graded index fiber.

is the only size is different in single mode and multimode step index fiber
@mohamedyasin28647 жыл бұрын
it nice explanation but in single mode index why you drawn only one straight line or it strike to the the walls of core
@EngineeringMadeEasy7 жыл бұрын
+mohamed yaasiin Hi...As the thickness of single mode fiber is so small that it allows only single mode to propagate through it. And Total Internal Reflection happens in single mode fiber also, Otherwise that particular guided mode would have been converted to leaky mode, hence leaving the optical fiber.

by mode of light you mean multiplexed signal or just one signal?
@EngineeringMadeEasy7 жыл бұрын
+Waqas Ahmed Mode here is of single mode and multi mode types, depending on whether single or multiple light rays propagate through the fiber.

What is Multimode graded index fiber ?
@EngineeringMadeEasy6 жыл бұрын
A multimode graded-index fiber has a core of radius (a). Unlike step-index fibers, the value of the refractive index of the core (n1) varies according to the radial distance (r). The value of n1 decreases as the distance (r) from the center of the fiber increases. The value of n1 decreases until it approaches the value of the refractive index of the cladding (n2). The value of n1 must be higher than the value of n2 to allow for proper mode propagation. Like the step-index fiber, the value of n2 is constant and has a slightly lower value than the maximum value of n1. The relative refractive index difference (Δ) is determined using the maximum value of n1 and the value of n2.
