Step up your scraper game with this little tool

I find hook when you roll it on the scraper better lasting, and generally better cutting.... But for years I've used screwdrivers but in most cases they are only harden at the tip, however using old gouges and other woodturning tools we all have lying around is far better option...so you'll see how I convert this old hybrid gouge into new purpose...

Scraper is a misnomer. The tool is actually a high angle plane. Grasping that principal makes for greater understanding of its use. Your sharpening technique for scrapers is a great lesson.

Tomislav, thank you for this detailed instruction. I'm a relatively new turner and have been struggling with some spalted ash that is very punky. Using the hook and roll method on my scraper allowed me to create an almost perfect, smooth and glossy surface on even the punkiest part of the blank. This will be my go-to technique, and will save lots of time and frustration. Keep up the high level of instruction, it's appreciated!

It's a joy to watch you do these videos. Those shavings were very impressive. I've always been a fan of scrapers and used them extensively for flatwork; they just leave such a great surface and I found that I could eliminate the need for sanding with good scraping. Really looking forward to the series you are putting together. That is one of the areas I need to expand in my turning tool set -- adding some additional scrapers for dedicated purposes.

Great video as usual Tomislav. I have been a wood worker for almost 60 years now and the absolute best burnisher that I have found is one made of the rod from a vehicle engine. I am still using one I made about 20 years ago.

Hello Tomislav, First of all, congratulations on your dream lathe. As I only started turning this year, I don't yet have any "old tools" to recreate this piece. I'm really looking forward to the new video series. I'm particularly looking forward to the video about the chisels. I took your words in the video about the decorative icicles to heart and prepared 12 beech blanks. Then I actually managed to make 11 pretty similar icicles with the chisel. One of them flew away. However, I often had a catch with the roundings that I can't explain. It would be great if you could go into this in more detail in the video about the chisels. I do prefer a burnished burr for shear scraping. I don't use a scraper for the final cut ever. I did see one turner who was turning some hard/sugar maple, and he totally honed off the burr and got an almost glass smooth finish cut. I am guessing that it is the wood, at least as much as the tool. For burnishing a burr on M42 high speed steel or the PM V10 metals, I use a carbide rod. I did find a source for them here, or old router bits work just fine, and they are generally highly polished. I do put them in a handle. The burr can be burnished down and raised back up a couple of times before it is time to go back to the grinder.

Great demo of getting a good scraper burr. I've been thinking about getting the Veritas Scraper Burnisher from Lee Valley. It has two carbide rods on a base and looks like another nice way to get a burr. I know the advantage of getting a great finish, by using a cabinet scraper, from my woodworking days. The key is that the tool used to manipulate the burr be harder than the steel you're trying to burnish. They also sell the carbide rods separately so I've considered just buying the rods and making my own base. The rods have tapered ends at either 5 or 10 degrees depending on how aggressive of a burr you want. I'd be curious if anyone else has used this system and how successful they have been with it. Love your tricks of the trade series. Thanks for sharing your tips!

@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning I'm surprised you don't have the Crown 268A CRYO Cryogenic Multi-Tip Shear Scraper. I love that tool and even bought an extra blade so I have another sharp blade on hand. I don't think I could shear scrape the inside of a bowl without it. You might have to check one out.

A lot of older wood workers use a drill rod for a card scraper. They are hard tool steel, fairly easy to find and usually a nice low price. I think it would probably work just fine for a turning scraper.

Доброго дня, Томислав. Для подобной цели попробуй старый напильник. Очень-очень старый. Их делали из очень хорошей прочной (но хрупкой) стали и до 1960 годов (плюс-минус два года) сталь для напильников закаливали на всю глубину. Сейчас делают только поверхностную закалку. У старого напильника надо только срезать верхний слой до чистой ровной стали. Рекомендую.

Hey Tomislav, how often do you use that technique before going to the grinder again? I feel like I can only use it once because after that the very top portion of the scraper (where you push against to roll the burr up) is "flat" and I can't roll it up again 😅

Hi, you can much like with cabinet scraper roll it 2-3 times but it get weeker with every roll and little more difficult to roll as well
