Posthumously given his pilot's license..... Captain Richard Russell. For a couple of minutes he was truly free more than any of us would ever be.

You can get a pilots license and rent planes

You are that free now. I would not recommend it, but you are that free. However, ponder this... given your new information of how free you are what are you going to do with it? Continue life the way you have, or will you take a leap and shoot for the moon? Even if you miss you get the stars. If you won't, maybe you don't deserve the freedom you have and should give up, there is surely someone with ambitions for good waiting for their chance. If you are not helping with the climb you are part of the load.

@Eric Bowman "Chalk it up to minimum wage" is what Beebo said. My understanding is he was making $12 an hour working outside in the rain while people flipping burgers inside the airport were getting the mandatory minimum wage of $15 an hour. Alaska airlines threatened to move their operations elsewhere if they were forced to pay employees the new minimum wage. My guess is he had enough of being shit on by a multimillion dollar corporation and finally snapped. Rich the wage slave some call him. He'll always be a hero to me everyone dies but for 1 hour Rich truly lived

That’s the thing about mental health...A person can pull off looking happy and normal to everyone around them but at the same time harbor a lot of pain inside. They get to the point where they bottle it up so much that it eventually explodes and things like this happen. It’s a terrible thing to see such a genuine good guy take his own life like this. On the bright side he will go down in the history books as the “Sky King” Richard Russel, formerly known as Beebo. The one guy that actually pulled a barrel roll in a regional Dash-8. It’s just a shame that another good person had to die because there was no help for them.

@R H Exactly, he suffered from the admirable trait of caring about other people. You hear it right to the end, he's concerned with not ruining other people's day...these are the people who you won't know are depressed until it's too late, they don't want to bring you down with their problems, and they're right, you would be annoyed by their problems. @@TheCort1971 I’m agreeing with him though. I don’t think what that guy did was courageous he was just so mentally disturbed he made a crazy decision. He even said he wasn’t all there. He just snapped. It’s more so just unfortunate than Heroic. You don’t call things like this heroic because other mentally disturbed people may be more willing to do the same thing and it may end worse. It’s irresponsible to say it’s heroic.

I have to say I never heard of this story until recently (week or so ago). It's mid July 2022 and I've heard the ATC recordings and the live chatter when it happened and he just jumped in line to take off. Of all the videos and recordings I had the same assessment of this guy. Richard seemed like a humorous guy, but you could definitely hear the dark tones but you'd never probably think that someone would kill themselves. We all have our demons. We all try and deal with it their own way. He didn't just have a beautiful life with a happy marriage and job etc. I would like to challenge the notion he just got up one day and then did this. He definitely planned it. He also trained himself as the guy says. So I'd like to think he was walling up and was focused on the task at hand. It's scary to think anyone could or would do this. Someone you know may be having issues. It's so much better to look like an @ss asking that person if they need help. Rather than just live knowing you missed the signs. Suicide is not a option, please seek help if you are seriously depressed. And don't give up. You will find someone who can and will be there for you. Just maybe not in the timeline you think. Just hold on a bit longer and then the rest will hopefully fall into place
