Starting my StepDeck Journey As A Owner Operator Working solely on the DAT Loadboard. The southern California open deck has always been a tough market but this time around feels even worse. Watch me struggle to find loads that pays descent out of Kansas with a stepdeck Trailer.

This is what’s happening jumping from a crappy place to another…never being abble to break the bad circle and every broker trying to take advantage of you.Rule number one-when times are tough stay in populated areas with small distances between markets ( aka Midwest). Rule number 2-don’t look for miles, look for money-aka do short distance loads( 3-500 miles average). Yes, right, more physical work but you spare the equipment.Rule numbrr 3-always check the market where the load is going to….not enough money to desdhead from there, don’t go.And the final rule-instead of working for nothing you better do nothing. Just stay in truck stop and wait for a better day. Book a load for next day or 2 days in advance. Remember, we are in the survival mode, not money making mode. Just try to survive, buy time and save the fight for another day.

I sold my truck and trailer as soon as rates went to $2.50 a mile. After i dead headed home for 650miles. I dont see how there still owner ops out there hauling that cheap freight

Paid off freightliners making it in this market. 2.50 average is like 2.80 a mile compared to those fancy trucks. That freightliner gonna look good when Das only thing on the road.

15:37 IT IS actually a pretty bad load. Even if it was Kearney to Casper directly with no additional stops it was still a bad load. At least in your case. Denver to Salina to Kearney is almost 650 deadhead miles bro. At the end you got 1100 miles for an oversize load, which is slightly above $2/mi, plus permits, plus time cause it would probably take you two full days to finish it. And you end up in another dead ☠️ zone in Wyoming and most likely would have to deadhead another 500-600 miles to find a decent paying load.

Congrats on the 5,000 subs you deserve it! I’m not familiar with step deck but 400 mile dead without having your next load booked seems hasty to me. Hope I catch ya on the I80 or I15 one of these days

Thank you 🙏. Based on what I was seeing within that area. I needed to deadhead another 300 miles. Hahaha That’s why I wanted to get a stepdeck to be able to cover many variety of freight but I’m not able to put it to the test just yet. Maybe I’m just not that familiar with it just yet.

Hey man you know how much is oregon weight distance cost per mile?
@pinoytrucking

They recently raised it to 0.26c/mile it was 0.239c/mile. I don’t know when .26 will take effect but it’s crazy.

Market will never turn around. Why would shippers want to pay more? Plenty of trucks on the road and that won’t change any time soon.

Your calacs seem low. A $1.20 a mile wth. I own my equipment, its .51 cpm for fuel, alone, driver pay is .65 cpm is a $1.15 alone. Then add all the other stuff. ????? Help me out here.

I’m not including driver pay in those figures. Since Im the driver/operator of this whole operation. I can imagine driver pay will be whatever is left of that if there’s any hahaha 😂

Are the team flatbed/step-deck rates trash too?
@pinoytrucking
@pinoytrucking 4 ай бұрын
I have seen some that are great when they do show up. With that being said; they rarely show up. I’m guessing because brokers have their teams already and a lot of those loads never make it on the loadboard to be listed.

I was gonna go flatbed again but I feel felt like it was too many deadzones. I think you can average 2.5+ is good. What I don’t like about flatbed loads is that too much work and not enough compensation. JMO…

Sorry I guess I didn’t understand the question. 1st is know your operating cost then charge accordingly based on how much you want to make along with factoring market fluctuations. 2nd I would place my truck in a better freight and area and run maybe a 400mile radius from that location.

Thanks for the info. My question was more towards the purchase of a flatbed. I really haven't found a decent dealer close to Arizona with fair prices on a used 48 foot combination split axle flatbed.

You called on a $4400 load, guy was giving you $5700 and you didn’t take it? That’s just wasting his time.

@@pinoytrucking Yes I’m hanging around the Midwest. I’m about become active with my brand New Authority with in a couple weeks. At the moment I’m running under JB Hunt. I do get out West just not much of an East Coast market driver. Perhaps, I may have to take some loads Going East/Southeast when I go active if it makes sense. But I believe I can get by staying Midwest and some Southwest. Will see. For the most part I am OTR here at J B Hunt.
