Of all the versions of Satin Doll I've heard him play over the years, this is my favorite, musically. His genius is endless. The greatest of all time.

I met stephane after a show in 1980 in Houston Texas. He handed me his violin to play. He admired a ring I had made for myself, it was a gold violin that fit my pinky finger so I placed it on his finger it fit perfect so I gave to him. I received a thank you card weeks later that I still have today. I’ve spent the last 38 yrs trying to learn all the tunes and play them like stephane. A true legend. My hero

For all that can be said about Stephan Grappelli’s endless talent. He truly had music exuding from his fingertips. And to be a great virtuoso, his knowledge put him in a primerary position of orchestral influence. Just like any famous composer or conductor. Which meant when simply joining in playing with a new group or musical band. That he was already ahead of the players, because his knowledge told him just what was needed & when to come in. Which invariably turned into a masterclass for all concerned.?!!!

Sublime musical master, and so very quiet and unassuming. Endless talent. Sadly, gone to the REAL stars, now

The great violinist has jazz history in his head. He plays a medley on piano like the instrument's a harp.

Beautiful standard, Time After Time. (Not the Cyndi Lauper song, which is fine, too) And then Satin Doll. I have loved Grapelli's violin work for 50 years (greatest jazz violinist), but I had no idea what a terrific pianist he was, too!

Very nice to listen to somebody nowadays whose piano style has obviously been influenced by Bix Beiderbecke's piano playing. Listen to Beiderbecke's "In a Mist".
