So Sheldon thinks that Leonard is confessing his failure in machismo and Sheldon thinks it may lower Stephanie's opinion of his masculinity, he is helping by saying he did at least put a lot of effort, kinda of like someone failing school but trying really hard. He is completely oblivious that Leonard is trying to avoid a fight about a girl he finds attractive is there in her night clothes. People like Sheldon rely on theoretical ideas they have heard/read to try to understand social interaction, not empathy from emotional understanding.

As with any sitcom though, I suppose it must evolve and reach an ending somehow and the ending they gave TBBT was absolutely beautiful I thought. The writers did an amazing job with the ending. I do miss new episodes though. I honestly doubt there will ever be another show like this one on T.V. ever again. I can remember watching the pilot when it first aired and thinking "This show is gonna be HUGE!" There had never been another one like it before

If you notice, they amplified pennys superficialness an bullsht right up to "settling" for leomard to up until the baby storyline.. Realistically they would never have broken up because a real life penny would either be in love with leonard as a form of understanding that its best she invest im him, given he was her best shot at a proper life. All the guys she dated were basically losers as the show points out and it became obvious that leonard was the only consistent anchor to her having a proper future.. She barely acted like she was interested in the relationship and marriage to leonard as opposed to when she was dating he losers... not realistic at all.

Had Penny been the type to have a serious relationship, she would have no need for Leonard--she could get anything she wanted from him by being a friend, no need for sex whatsoever since she would be getting it everywhere else. She was a party gal from the midwest, he was a brainy type constantly sleeping with brainy women. The fact she isn't his type and vice versa makes her the obvious "trophy" for him to win over and feel better about himself--that's what it meant for her to choose him, she doesn't go for brainy types because she isn't one herself. If Penny had not been a party gal, she would have been with that one guy who even Amy felt something toward (Zack) since he had stability with his father's menu business, and they would have been equal in intellect. She could have kept scamming dinner out of the guys and hanging out with them whenever her boyfriend was busy, though he felt after the telescope routine that he might actually fit in. (though some attractive women who love playing the dating game will also try for the guy out of their league, just to prove to themselves they can win at everything). In real life, women like Penny tend to go with the stable good guy over the random alpha when the biological clock begins to ring and they want a faithful father--that's what is meant when it's said, "nice guys finish last".

I suspect she left (in story) cause Sheldon became unbearable (asking for the all the health diagnoses) but they didn’t show it cause she was popular and a good fit for Leonard so they just didn’t show any bad fallout like they did for his other girlfriends. Also, I think the implication is that whoever got with Leonard had to also accept Sheldon (and vice versa).
