A behind-the-scenes look at Stephanie Metz's large-scale, touchable felt sculpture project 'InTouch'.
**Wearing a respirator is important when cutting polystyrene with hot wires, especially if you're doing it a lot. I know, I didn't in this video-- I used a plastic-walled space with a window to the outdoors, and used a fan to circulate the air. Should have just grabbed my respirator.
**SO MANY people ask about the foam carving tools used: get them at hotwirefoamfactory.com/ (and no, I do not have any official affiliation with them, but SO MANY people ask).
As for the glue, I use Styrogoo Instant Tack EPS Foam Glue, also from Hot Wire Foam Factory.
This video shows my process for carving foam models, with a look at the tools, safety (remember that respirator!), and clean-up.

This is amazing on so many levels. I had never thought of making a 3D sculpture to then create a fabric pattern! I’ve been stuck for years in a project that I wanted to created a stuffed raccoon but didn’t know how to cut the fabric to form a stuffed head. I may have to use this method!

What a lovely, charming host/instructor. You're very good at demonstrating and explaining the processes you use in shaping your work. I'm a stone and wood carver/sculptor. After watching this video I am considering using Styrofoam to tryout various positions of the animals I carve/sculpt to get a closer idea of my finish piece. Stone and wood are not materials you can add to should you make a mistake and stone is especially expensive. Thank you for sharing this tutorial.

So psyched when you said you collect/use pre-owned foam. I do the same, its free, its better for the world, its free, its not th best for the environment so the less mas the better, and not sure if i mentioned yet but its 99% of the time free(haha). I also do the same with the enclosure, I use a small tent, but thinking of your way with a "permenanent" area. Thank you for sharing, great info and wicked easy on the eyes :) . @StephanieMetzSculpture
@StephanieMetzSculpture 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jess, you can just use sandpaper but I think the metal rasp tool I use was something I just found at the hardware store-- maybe in the drywall or painting areas? It was a very long time ago. I start with pretty coarse sandpaper like 60 grit or even rougher, and go finer from there depending on the final needs of your piece. Do remember to protect yourself from the tiny dusty bits. Happy carving!

@StephanieMetzSculpture
@StephanieMetzSculpture 5 жыл бұрын
@@hectorm2583 depending on the size you may be able to find pre-made spheres and cones at craft stores. If it's meant to look like ice cream you luckily don't need a perfect sphere I'm guessing; I tend to draw the profile I'm looking for on all sides of the block I'm starting with-- in this case you could trace a plate or something else circular. I'm not sure what else to say except, er, remove material until you get what looks right. Remember you can sand or rasp your rough surface to get to a smoother one.

Hi Stephanie. Great video! It shows that you love what you do!! Got a few questions for you: 1) Is there a specific name for that rasp tool? Is it specific for foam? 2) And lastly, can I shape styrofoam with a regular sand paper? I'm trying to build a kicking board for swimming. They used to make them in styrofoam but now they make it with a different material which has less buoyancy. I never worked with styrofoam so I appreciate any information on this.
@StephanieMetzSculpture
@StephanieMetzSculpture 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, I think that rasp tool just came from the hardware store; I don't remember if there's a particular name for it, but I don't recall it being meant for styrofoam. And yes, you can shape styrofoam with regular sand paper, starting with rougher and going to smoother, just like wood. It's definitely messy and gets all over and sticks to everything with static electricity. Be prepared with a space to clean up; a shop vac helps. And do wear respiratory protection so you don't breathe the tiny bits in. Oh, and there are also different densities of styrofoam. I don't know a ton about kickboards, but you might do a search for 'best eps foam for kickboards' or similar to guide you. Good luck and happy swimming!

Hi Stephanie, it's me again. the carving and sanding turned out great after following your instructions. Those little pesky bits are very "affectionate" :) But it seems that the styrofoam (styrene) I worked with is a bit permeable. Do you know any product I can use to waterproof/seal the board?
@StephanieMetzSculpture
@StephanieMetzSculpture 2 жыл бұрын
@@CreativeFilms2003 hmm, there may be some spray coatings you can find at the hardware store like PlastiDip; you have to make sure any coating won't react with the foam and melt it chemically. I think PlastiDip fulfills that, but you'll need to research it more...
