My mum taught me to sew....very precisely, no short cuts, everything pinned, on grain, every marking transfered with tailors tacks or a tracingcwheel and chalk. Instructions followed meticulously. The results were chefs kiss, but oh so time consuming. I have never learnt to loosen up. And now I no longer sew ...but I did teach my daughter, and she is much freer and loves sewing.

Ha! "Pinned"? Not basted? 😄 There's your 1st shortcut. I loved sewing until I needed glasses to see what I was doing. There were no $1.00 magnifiers at T,G&Y at that time so I lost my fire. At least you taught your daughter. Mine might be able to hem a sheet. 🤫

Thank you for saying this. It was exactly what I wanted to say. I love it! Definitely I love your style of speaking and I hope I have some tips for you for your back, I’ll email you. First set your feet parallel to each other shoulder width apart. Second reach with both arms straight up stretching in a relaxed way. Third use one hand to grab the rest of the other and pull straight up with that wrist and hand. Fourth on the side of the hand that’s grabbing, lift your heel about an inch or two. Fifth, now stretching as much as you can while still being relaxed, pull up and over about 1 to 2 inches, at the most, to the side. Sixth, Take two deep extremely relaxed breaths while you are in this position. Seventh, repeat doing the same thing on the other side. What you’re doing here is opening the vertebrae on one side without compressing the other side. If you do this or two relaxed breaths for each side several times a day, it can help release all the tension of the previous work. I taught it to dentists and people who lift heavy things and a woman who trims her twelve mini horse’s hooves. They all LOVE it! I hope this helps everyone who reads this and please pass it on if you like it! The more people who know how to ease backs, the happier our whole world.

Two tips to deal with sewing with a wreaked back. First, raise your cutting table to at least the height of the kitchen bench. This can be done with blocks of wood if you don't need to raise it much. Alternatively, pieces of plumbing pipe can be jointed together to make a plinth or just slip onto the legs of the table if possible to lengthen them The sewing machine will be more comfortable to use if you can raise the table it sits on, and, tilt the machine itself towards you. Experiment with the angle until it is right for you. Mine is around 1 1/2" . Use something that absorbs vibrations such as an old phone book or easers. My husband also built me a large surround perfectly aligned. These are great as it stops you getting crick in your neck. I can sew for hours instead of minutes since tilting my machine. Sorry for the novel, but I hope you will try these suggestions, being in pain is horrid

Pam says- when mom 's dresses fit the neck too loose, she added two 1/4 inch darts on the back neckline about 3 inches long perpendicular to the portion of neckline being cinched. It made a kind of cupping shape that helped to hold the neckline in place without tightening the fit in front. She moved them slightly wider for more square necklines. Cheers 😎

I made one similar to that except the skirt portion is straight. I find that the shoulders slip a bit, it can make the dress uncomfortable to wear. So in order to keep the shoulders from slipping, I sewed a strip of fabric in the back of the opening for the head, you could even use a piece of stretchy fabric to add in the back so your head could slip into easily.

I love you! I’m having a back flare up too. From forking goat manure, and stacking hay bales. I like this dress pattern a lot. ...and I am so glad I have a heating pad.

I always say I'll finish the project first and add pockets later....... I still don't have pockets in anything I've made.

I did that too and learned to just put them in at the start. 🥲

😬 i bought the same two patterns (B4790, B6211) 4 month ago. I love the tea length fifty's style. I needed to reorganize my sewing room and get my vintage machines going. So they have been on hold. Today working in my sewing room i decided to watch some sewing vids because I love watching sewing creations. I've been sewing since a kid. My mother had to make my clothes because i was too skinny and too long for store bought clothes. I've made a lot of my own clothes and clothes for others. I had to quit due to shoulder surgery. I'm sure you can relate. Now I'm 58 and wanted to start making my clothes again. And what do i see the two patterns i bought!!! Never new they were called walk away dresses, until today 😂 And they have problems to boot lol 😂 I've watched it be made the correct way by the patten and made by a block pattern (which i will be making a full pencil skirt). I just want to say thank you for showing these videos of this pattern because i will know why im pulling my hair out or threads not sure which 😂😂😂 I'm definitely using scrap for my first run now.

I love sewing by the seat of my pants! I have actually made this dress before. I changed the button part to a belt style so it could be adjusted to my ever changing waist size.

"and she contemplated why she agree to do this in the first place." 🤣 if you didnt hit that moment, did you really do the challenge? Still, thank you so much for the pattern and the idea, its been so fun to watch everyone's videos. I would say that was the fun part 😝

That looks like a lot of fun. Despite the fit issues, your dress looks lovely. Too bad my schedule is insanely busy. I would have loved to give it a shot. I have 8 pairs of slacks to hem before I can even think about sewing another dress for myself.

Stephanie, your chaotic sewing methods and ongoing thoughts/narrative is exactly how I muddle through life. I'd use the term "spirit animal" but it's not PC, and I don't know what the right term should be. But you're that for me 😆

I use that same bias tape for finishing quilts! It's... uh.... fine. It's not the worst I've used. It's got mystery fiber in it (poly). The seams are butt-glued to each other, but have survived multiple washings on both the quilt one kid and one dog have adopted as their own. It's more important that my geriatric moron of a dog has a cozy spot to sit under my sewing table than I have perfect binding, so it's... fine.

I made the walkaway dress from the reproduction pattern several years ago and I used that Star Trek fabric! Thanks for creating this challenge - I haven't sewn much the past few years but now that I have watched a bunch of the videos, I might get back into it.

Chaos sewing is good! Sewing things how you want to is good! It's your process and your garment/item so therefore you're the only one who has a say! -a very beginner chaos sewist and general chaos crafter

This was a great project, well done you. You flooded the YT with 'walkaway' videos. Can't even imagine how busy the Instagram must be. I like you're version of the dress, very pretty. And, yay, for voting. We just voted in our new city council. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

I did the exact same thing with marking the darts on the right side and then having trouble later! I ended up redrawing them later because it was too hard to get them pinned correctly.

Hi Stephanie. I loved your video. Hope your back feels better. You asked for suggestions what we would like to see you do, and here is my request. Dismantle a favorite ready made dress, make a pattern adding pockets of course, and sew❤❤❤❤❤ a new dress in some delicious or a zany fabric. I've wanted to try it but I'm scared shi-less. But I know you can pull it off! Anyhow, you really rock!

You did great :) I call myself a Distracted Sewer, with all love. So refreshing to see you go to it in a similar manner! Also, at minute 7:12, hope there's not pens and coffee together, in the mug holding down your skirt pattern? Please consider a video abt how to sew and take care of your back, etc. too! Many of us sew with disabilities, and we can totally cheer each on to sew, be creative, and do it without hurting ourselves. Thanks and take care.

I took a private sewing class at age 9. I am now 59. 50 years of knowledge, not to say I have sewn all that time. I helped other students in my high school freshman Home Economics class. I can sew well, but my weak spot is fitting. I can draft a pattern just fine, but making those changes in commercial patterns drives me nuts. Fitting is so important.

I just watched this while in the middle of sowing my first "all by myself" project. Took a course 1,5yrs ago, did things there, and some repares in the meantime, but nothing "real". Now I'm trying to remake a sweaterdress (??) that I like to wear, so I made the pattern from something sowen together... I can really see myself in you in this video - I would also sing if I was video documenting it, I am plus size, I tend to take shortcuts (but being a newbe really should not), I have no idea howvthis will turn out, I just know I will wear it if it will physicaly be possible! Lol! For starters it is my first long sleeves (and second ever sleeves) plus my first pockets, so I already used the lefover material for something else after cutting, when I discovered, that I only have two halves of a sleeve!!! In any case. I like your video, it inspires my project ;) ;) ;)
