If it's not rude to ask any of you all, when did you go to the doctor to try and get a diagnosis? How did they go about the procedure or trying to find out? I'm 16, and I've been experiencing something like tics for the past 3 shy of 4 years; started around covid (December). I know 2 people with tourettes (one also has autism and the other has the vulgar words kind) and I've been battling a lot with seemingly motor issues and very recently been struggling with vocal issues again like I did in the beginning. I've done my fair share of research into it to try and whittle it down by coming up with different reasons and this seems like the most optimal explanation, but I don't want to self diagnose. I worry that if I do go it'll be a day where these don't occur as much and I'll be labelled as not having it; any advice?

@piddly Жыл бұрын
Stephanie, you did a wonderful job researching the scale of tics of Tourettes and how that scale can slide. My husband has Tourettes and some were so faint that I didn't notice it when we first got together. They come more frequently when stressed or worried. Every once in a while, the current ones may be so inauthentic in movements that he gets small injuries. For example, like it looks like a quick mini-backbend you would do at your work desk, but very jerky that it could throw your back out. Another is severe bruising when he is massaging each abdominal muscle with great force. Most of the time he doesn't know he is doing the small tics. He gets very overwhelmed and doesn't speak about it much. His current medicine cocktail doesn't seem to being doing very much, but it is actually way better than what it was like before. His oral tics happen more when he is at home or in the car after he has "held in" or attempted to control his smaller tics (like blinking, shoulder shrugging, etc.) all throughout the work day. Each person has their own journey and battles. I'm so proud of my husband and he is an amazing friend, intelligent partner, and focused worker. Thank you for sharing this information with your viewers!

Hey Stephanie! I have had tics since I was 12 years old but to this day most people that I work or study with daily don't even realize I have Tourette's. Most tics are easily overlooked by others. Also, some people develop Tourette's later in life, another woman got severe tics after turning 40! I just wanted to point that out because you kept using the fact that his peers didn't see any tics as evidence, which is not really reliable. Hope that gives a better insight :)

So my husband has echolalia, usually words he finds unusual in the English language (it’s his fourth language but my first) and the one word that’s banned in our house is “Haberdashery” lol you might think “how often would you use that word anyway?” But when someone is repeatedly involuntarily repeating it over a week later, that once in a blue moon is enough lol He also seems to be triggered by television, like if someone says something on TV he’ll repeat it back but luckily we don’t watch to much. It’s not Tourette’s tho, it’s one of his autistic traits. I obviously love him regardless and I’m sure I do things that seem weird to him, we are still a happy wee family & I wouldn’t change him for the world 💜

Stephanie I have severe vocal ticks and the way you described them was pretty spot on, mine don’t come in the form of words but rather pain full screams that feel like all the air is being sucked out of my lungs but I’m sucking in they happen everyday multiple times a day at random the only thing I’ve found that can soothe them is mints but sometimes that dose even help. I’ve heard every description in the book of what the sound like from dogs barking to owls mating and birds screeching. imagine having hiccups but they are extremely loud, elongated and painful and happening multiple times a day. My friend was talking to one of her friends in my class who I haven’t talked to and all she said he knew me as was “that girl with the loud screams” I hear giggles and I used to laugh along but I just can’t anymore it’s to embarrassing I have extreme anxiety over this. I can’t be diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome because I don’t have motor ticks as well there’s only one other person I know of who has ticks like mine her names Abigail her mom makes videos to spread awareness and share her story (we’ve never met in person but my mom has reached out to her mom and they’ve discussed about both of our struggles) No doctor has been able to give us a correct or straight answer, we’ve both been diagnosed with FND but it just wrong that’s not it I’ve gotten my hopes up so many times, seen so many doctors who can only give me sympathetic looks and shake their head and call me the 1%, the patient no one wants to be the patient no one can diagnose. One doctor even suggested that it might just be in my head. I still don’t know what’s wrong with me. How many years will I have to wait till I get the right answer? The fact that somebody would actually want that is beyond me.
