Kobe is a close second to Jeter. People don't realize how difficult it is to win an NBA title with the Lakers. Yes they have won 17 but the spotlight is so intense it will shrink most players. Tim Duncan had it easy playing for the Spurs, that is why Kobe was a better leader. Same with Jeter. Winning five titles with the Yankees under that intense spotlight is incredible. DJ and Kobe are 1 and 1A.

Whereas Jeter to the Yankees and Kobe to the Lakers are huge because they came in under the biggest spotlight in their respective sports. Secondly, there is the matter of Brady playing three years for the Buccaneers. He won a SB with them but that stint tarnished his otherwise sterling legacy.

He clearly is. Bill Russell, Magic and Bird as well in Basketball. Jeter, Mattingly and many others in baseball. But it's time to talk about Jeter, so I have no problem with them pointing out how Jeter managed to keep his nose clean for 20 years. He had the intelligence to, for example, wait to get married until he wasn't on the road all the time. His parents should get a lot of the credit, just as Aaron Judge's parents seem to have done a good job.

I have never liked the Yankees (being a lifelong Cardinals fan and native of the STL); however, DEREK JETER (based on the time frame given) IS the greatest leader over that span. What separates "The Captain" from anyone else that comes to mind (i.e. Tom Brady) is that he played his entire career with no controversy attached to him. He remained consistent through ownership and management changes (nearly 3500 hits, 5 World Series titles (including one three peat) in 6 appearances. Currently, the man holds MLB postseason records for games played (158), plate appearances (734), at-bats (650), hits (200), singles (143), doubles (32), triples (5), runs scored (111), total bases (302) and he did this when steroids was a major issue. His name was never attached to any controversy. It's not Brady, it's Derek Jeter and he should have went in unanimously, like his teammate Mariano Rivera did last year and how Ken Griffey, Jr. should have been unanimous as well.
@thetodd27384 жыл бұрын
Smartest comment I've read today. As a yankee fan I may sound biased but Jeter navigated the New York media market without ever having a problem with them. No teammate of his can say he was anything but the best leader. Never acted selfish. I agree Griffey should have been a unanimous choice. Without injuries, Griffey would have shattered records. Sweetest swing in baseball.

Bonds was great but he was on the juice. Not taking anything away from his talent but i know he would not be on the supreme level that he was on without the juice. Griffey was natural and you saw how great he was naturally. Imagine if griffey was juicing... he would be on an insane level of greatness.

Zinedin Hadzajlija maldini, puyol, keane, and sergio ramos are the greatest captains ever! in terms of leaders.. celtics scott brown is a great leader and great captain.. maybe not for accomplishments and the better player.

@18magicMARKer4 жыл бұрын
Mariano was the best closer almost every year! Jeter was maybe the 3rd best SS during his prime? in his 20 year career he was 2nd in MVP out of 15 teams? try winning the MVP against all the players like in NBA, NFL. He was lucky to be with the Yankees when some really great players players who cheated and an owner who spent like crazy. Jeter is the most overrated player ever. He benefited from being a really good player (not great) for a really long time in the center of the baseball world. If you ask an GM and said build your team around any player, no would pick him!

Derek Jeter in my opinion is the best to ever play the game. And it was a treat to watch him play in person at Yankee games.

@Mr_B794 жыл бұрын
As a life long Mets fan (yeah yeah I know) I've tipped my cap to Jeter over and over again. a true leader for 162 + games a year over the course of 6-7 months , that's more than half a year with your teammates and he never faltered on that leadership role. Oh and doing so for the Yankees which even if you're 9th in the lineup you still have a spotlight on yourself. # 2 is MJ #3 Popovich #4 Tom Brady/Bill Belichick.

It's of the extremest rarity in professional sports that u have men - not just that on the field, but who r also the definition of a gentlemen off the field! Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera are in that extremest of rarity, mind-boggling that they played together for the same franchise! Not one epitome of a role model, but two! There are more than many who should very well take a cue from these two about how to conduct yourself! It's great having game, but when it comes to real life, your image stands out over all!
